Idiotic? It's covered several times on this site, you could've started by searching.

But here's the actual section from the BRZ manual:

Second section on first page. I don't know about you, but I didn't skim the manual when I first got the car and this was one of the first things I read.

Screw the manual op continue to not read the owners manual and hold the record for not doing so:

" Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction."
