Tacoma and Hilux are similar in size, and yeah, I do consider it a "US Hilux" though in some configurations, the Tacoma is bigger, but it does NOT have a V8 (never mind I wish it did). They are based on a similar if not the same platform, which also underpins the last gen LC Prado (aka Lexus GX470), 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Fortuner and this van thing they sell somewhere over in asia, don't remember the name.

I've experienced both cars, and seen the result too. Hilux in Thailand labeled Hilux Vigo. Beside a better looking interior, off road capable is not on par with Triton. Less fuel efficient and less power even though it come with electronic turbo( I dunno if it's correct, but a turbo). Even my old 1993 LC can beat Hilux vigo in every category except fuel efficient(both are diesel powered). I've seen only I4 and V6 Hilux Vigo there, never seen V8 one. And one more thing Prado is a piece of crap comparing to GX470. When you drive it up to more than 130km/h (pavement)its steering start to shake. I don't know if it only happens to Arabic and Thai Prado or every Prado. I've never test driven the new one yet.
Here a clip GT-R goes rally-like road. LOL Everyone there take any car to road like that even Ferrari or Bently.( sadly, no video of those)

Don't be fool by looking at the road. It's much worst than you think it is.

What makes it crappy?

The Hilux Surf (4Runner here) is the same so I don't know why they made a specific truck for the US Market. I do like how the current Tacoma went mid sized but I agree, a V8 option AND a turbo diesel just like the Hilux would have been sweet!

Are you guys vehicles manufactured locally? Prado as I know it is rock solid, however of course the GX is better put together. It has to be a Lexus FFS. Crap is a very harsh description.

Prado is supposed to be a vehicle with highly off-road capable, same goes to GX, and They are a level below LX and LC. I used to take the previous gen Prado off-road ( bough it from Arab), I felt like it lacked of s.th that my old LC had. The Second gen Prado is sure a solid ride on and off-road, but the third one is crappy. I'm sure of it because my friend's old prado did the same. and Yes, calling it crappy is harsh, but you don't pay for 110K USD new ( in my country) for a car that can't go off road like it older brother.
@ RRnold: Like I mentioned in my previous post. 3rd gen Prado has problem with steering wheel, which make it shakes after you go over 130km/h, and it also lacks of stability when u go over 130km/h on-road. Beside the problem, its reliability is on top.

LX and LC are legendary off-roaders. Since the first one through today model they both still deserve the name Legendary off-roader from me.

The one out now is the 4th gen prado (5th if you count the LC-light) I know it's a level below the LC/LX, but i have extensive time in the 3rd gen prados, and there is nothing crap about them.

You cant complain that 130km/h on road shaking is a reflection of it being crappy offroad. You aren't making any sense

Complain to your gov't and customs for having to pay $110k usd for a prado... ouch. At best the Prado is a 45k vehicle.

About the shaking thing is a complaint. Another one is off-road ability is less capable than its older brother.
Yes. Paying 110K for a new Prado is stupid. Imported tax is the main reason making any car pricey. However, imported taxes on high end cars is about the same as Prado, GX,LX,LC and other big ass big displacement.
