Rotary engines are great...in a world where weight savings is important and fuel savings is not.

Right now they are only 50% great.

And, a lot less people will work on them, especially if you need a rebuild.

In the end, there is a reason Mazda dropped being all rotary during the energy crisis in the 70's and a reason they dropped it now too.

Personally, I really don't like Mazda. Except I could live with the Miata, except for the girly styling.

I recently inquired about a 4 rotor, prices were $55,000 for a race only motor, not boost and no street use.

They did make a 3 rotor that would stomp on the 4 rotor, with all the bells and whistles for 11-13 grand (I assume for just the engine)

One of the best power/weight ratio, due to the strict emssions mazda discontinued the rotary engine.

Ah, this is what I was looking for. A functional diagram of the rotary engine.

Suggestion for the OP, if you're going to stuff a 4-rotor into an FD I would appreciate it if you used an FD that is beaten up to the point where making it original would be a money pit, leave the original ones that have managed to stay together for those that appreciate the FD for what it was.

Too many great cars get turned into franken projects leaving even fewer affordable examples. I think I see a new V8 swap FD RX-7 weekly asking an absurd amount of money and it makes me a sad panda...

If I were building an rx7, I'd want a reliable 13b setup. 350-380hp. Fully dressed in RE Amemiya goodness

The RE Amemiya FD is still one of my all time favorite cars

It's cheaper to do it like that yeah. I'd get a old beat (atleast structurally sound) FD.

I had 15k into my 3 rotor single turbo setup I was going to put in my 2nd gen. I ended up selling off the project to payoff my student tuition loans, never made it into the car. Went full racing beat and Pineapply Express bridge port build. Never intended to build a 20b but, after seeing Aaron's ( [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwJTlPpET6U&index=4&list=UUKCX2HWaPkk7HLSo BgII2xg[/ame] ) black one in person it was destined love. I've followed almost every build on rx7club's old days of guys building 4 rotors, everything it custom and they tend to have the knowledge and skill (engineers/cnc/cad) to do most of the work themselves. Despite doing a ton of the fabrication work themselves they still had 40k+ into a car.

Hate myself everytime someone asks about the car as it is a huge regret. I met the guy I sold the engine to a little while back and it ended up in an old prop-plane.

Do it again I might just swap in a 13b-re or cave in and do an LS for intant giggles on the budget.

Ill give you my 2 cents since I use to own a FC. I don't care what anyone says about how unreliable a rotary is. It is reliable, a NA one that is. Adding FI into the turbo like any other FI engine, creates certain reliability issues.

Here a few things you need to look out for.
1. It is gonna burn oil, all rotars do.
2. Most FC/FD are old now, so a rebuild is a must. Rebuild kit is about $1k with all the seals, bearings, gaskets, and packing.
3. The Series 5 rotars have lighter rotars, thus the redline is at 8k. Easily can be setup and mod to make 9k. Series 5 I believe is MY89+. Series 4 is MY84 and below until you get to the 12A rotars. The 13b rotars are in the FC and FD.

You want to make power on NA and kick some turbo ass. One word, "Bridge porting"
