Miata has won several COTY awards and it is even more of a niche vehicle... The only reason the FRS/BRZ wouldn't get awards would be if the car simply wasn't good enough

I think it's lacking in one area, power. All the reviewers will (and have) said that this car would be perfect it had xx more horsepower.

Of course I'm an advocate for a twin win, but keep in mind the U.S. car magazines would like to see the U.S. car market succeed. Cadillac XTS has gotten a lot of attention and is a bit more of a universal car than a purpose built sports coupe. But an award like Car of the Year would be a nice little "name drop" when telling people about my new car.
