Had something similar happen on my BMW; the splash guard got loose and was rubbing on the tire at highway speeds (wind resistance was strong enough to push it back toward the tire). It melted/tore away. It was the burning plastic smell more than the noise that tipped me off. The damage looked very much like your pics.

That definetely explains it all ! 2 weeks back I was driving and started smelling something like was burning? i thought it was the oil filter leaking oil so I got that serviced and smell went away so now i believe that by the time i drove to get oil change that the mud guard liner must've been taken out already

that looks more like it got melted/torn off during driving instead than someone trying to steal the fogs.

Yup looks like you hit something or ran over something rather hard and busted it open.

You can see the rough scruff marks..
