That is seam sealer. It is mainly used for filling seams where two components meet to prevent water from getting inside the seam. It is not there for strength and is usually easily removed. Race prepared cars usually have all the seam sealer removed to reduce weight.

As for corrosion, if there are holes facing the ground where the water can easily drain after it gets into that area, I wouldn't be concerned.

I thought seam sealer was structural, if it is not, does this just mean that the uni-body is warping or flexing causing the panels to separate?

That gap is not a sign of stress. The floor above has a feature stamped into it that was not included in the piece below.

The floors of most cars are stamped from one large sheet of steel. To give the floor rigidity, long narrow stamped steel pieces are welded to the floor. These pieces usually only sit flush with the floor where it will be welded (floor has different features that makes it not a flat surface). That gap is an example of where it was not necessary to have the reinforcing piece stamped to sit flush. There is no value added to make it look nice underneath where it will never be seen.

I can understand that, It just looks by the bead of the sealant, that it was made with one pass of an electric calking gun, but the gap looks wider than the other beads around it, and with the way the "ribs of calk" look stretched from the sides, it just appears that the panels are separating. I'll have to get under mine and see what it looks like. Do you have to take any under panels off to see this or is it just an open part of the floor pan?

Edit: never mind, I think that looks like the edge of the transmission tunnel.

Thanks guys, what I will do is just use some seam sealer to keep water and corrosion from getting in there, since I use it in the winter.

Be careful, if there's no other way for water to get out of there (other drain holes somewhere) you might actually be creating a rust problem by trapping any water that gets in there in the future.

I don't like letting the dealership work on my car. Last time I took it in there to replace the tail lights under warranty, they begged me to let them do a free oil change (I do mine every 2500-3k miles with mobil 0-20). I let them "do an oil change," and when I got home, I meticulously cleaned the entire car (including the engine bay).

Well, unless the dealership uses K&N filters, I"d say there's a good chance they didn't change my oil.

Oh man, I understand that then.

Allowing them to tackle this problem wouldn't give you the greatest peace of mind. Is there another Toyota dealer close by?

If you decide to go that route try giving Scion a call to see if there is anything they can do for you:

http://www.scion.com/contact/

TELEPHONE
Call the Scion Customer Experience Representative at 1.866.70.SCION

-----------------------------

If they can't, I wish you the best on the mending.
