The target age for an IS250 is well north of 50, so you've got nothing to worry about. Most people in their 20s buy used, that drives the average up.

21 Y/O here, 22 before the end of this year.
20,000 ^ to 23,000 just means I'll need a bit larger down payment (assuming they don't wrench the car into something completely different than what we were all hoping for).
Theres no way I'd be paying in full with cash, I'd have to finance. I don't have a problem spending more money down the road, but I will make sure I will have a large down payment to cover a good chunk.

The article doesn't say they are axing the Boxer motor, the first responder simply misread the article is all. They are going to work for better emissions/economy over power... which sucks, cause I'd take a 22mpg sports car with 200hp over something like.. hmm I guess a Civic Si. I've seen over 40mpg in that, and I know its a decently fun car to drive. But I'd rather spend my money on a 200hp RWD coupe, because thats what I want.

Also, just wondering, how reliable do you all think Autocar really is? I mean I'm sure they are pretty accurate about cars that are already out and all, but anyone else think of the redesign rumor from not to long ago? That's always the first thing that pops into my head whenever I read anything that isn't directly from the horses mouth.
Not sure how reliable they are but they did give is the video interview with the designer the other week which is the best info we have had outside of any of the motorshows...

I don't like this news one bit. It seems like Toyota just pulled a bait and switch on us.

I think Toyota made this change based on how successful Nissan has been with their 350z / 370z. That's catered to an older audience while still remaining a 'sport' compact at a much higher starting price than 23-26k.

All I know is that I would have been absolutely happy beyond belief if I could get a 200HP N/A lightweight ,RWD, good looking car for a starting price of 20K. Absolutely thrilled. Now, as things get closer to production we start hearing less of what we want to hear... and more of what we feared.

It always bothered me that Toyota kept mentioning all these cool aspects of this one car but kept slipping in the mention of wanting to make a 'green' sports car that they would base off of the FT-86. Looks like we know which badge will be put on this car if this information is true. Corolla, and no not that Corolla either.

Toyota is really missing the point with this car.

When Carlos Ghosn turned Nissan's image around with a fun car, the GTR, they focused on the major things like fuel consumption and target demographics.

Oh wait, no...they focused on performance and more performance.

I guess somethings are true good to be true, especially with Toyota; hopefully they follow and make a car with some balls.

With a few grands increased on the price, they have to make it 200hp NA. Don't ruin everything Toyota. $3K increased= 2-3mpg more and 6-10 hp more with non-cr*p interior like Scion tC.

Ugh, I'm still upset over this news. I honestly hope this 'news' is complete bull plop.

This goes against everything Toyoda said he wanted this car to be. How will a higher price tag sell more product? Somehow the older 'target audience' will say this car didn't look too attractive until it went up $3,000 dollars in price and lost horsepower? That older demographic already has SO MANY NEW boring economic cars to choose from that I don't understand why Toyota feels they need to apply their family sedan formula to the only 'sports' car they've put out in YEARS. What in flying cake fart kingdom is so bad about having ONE inexpensive sports car in your line up instead of ANOTHER economic fuel sipping family sedan.

Once again this just puts Toyota back in line with Honda. Business first, car company second.

I'm going to go pound some sand.

I expected it to base around $23k anyway, so I really don't see what the uproar is about. Target demographic has little to do with how well a car it becomes, and for all we know, that could apply to japan only. I think Toyota knows very well what they have to deliver in order for this car to be a success, I just hope that they realize that they sell enough prius, corollas and Yaris to give us a sports car that does not need to be a hyper miler. On that note, here's hoping they make the boxer motor as good as it possibly can be, because it might just mean that they arent getting enough mpg at the 200+hp they ought to give us. The LFA after all is rumored to be getting 14/20 mpg!!!!!!

man, the hype for this car is unreal.

And I interpretted what the article said differently, nowhere does it say they are going to get rid of the boxer engine, rather that didn't meat the emissions they wanted it to, so I think they are just going to work on making that engine cleaner. Different head, internals, that kind of stuff.
^ What he said (except the 21 part ).

I'm saying bogus. They marketed this thing on GT5, the internet response is from younger buyers not 40 somethings, and the price, type of vehicle, and power they are suggesting would not interest a 40 something. Bogus, bogus, bogus. Something else to stir the pot......NEXT!

2 words come to mind "MARKET SAMPLING" how many times do you hear of companies saying this will have this and that just to see how the public/media reacts?

As far as I'm concerned tho if I didn't hear it from see it from Toyota then I have to take it with a grain of salt.

In the same sense however if this car comes 3k more, I'll still buy it, might hurt the wallet a bit more, but im in it for the total package deal, and if they manage to squeeze more mpg for the same specs, then count me in, the gas savings will offset the 3k increase over the lifetime of the vehicle.

I am very displeased by this news. Quite frankly I think it is insulting to see Toyota wanting to up the age demographic. Like because i'm in my 20's I have no right buying this car? Give me a break. And bumping up the price better damn well mean they deliver on performance. If they make this thing 170hp and offer no turbo version I will surely be looking for a nice used C5 z06 corvette to buy for less than $25k instead of this toyota crapper.

i don't put much faith in that article. the current Si makes 200hp (near enough), gets nearly 30mpg highway, and starts in the low $20,000 range. in a smaller, lighter car with DI, i think 200hp and 30mpg are perfectly attainable. i don't mind if the car is slightly higher in price, but not much. $23,000 would be fine.

-Mike

EDIT: you people need to settle down about the target demographic statement. they're not going to check your age to buy the car. it's a target. the 350Z was targeted at people having a mid-life crisis. 40+. chill people.
