Consulting work is HUGE in the pharma industry. I can't tell you how many consultants we have working at my pharma company. If this guy can not only formulate the meds but also do ANDA submissions, he's a gold mine. And he definitely lives in the right state to be doing that sort of work. NJ is the World-wide Mecca of the pharma industry.

How did you know?! Haha yeah, I work for BI. Went to school for pharma marketing and management, did an internship here this summer in Development in Quality and Records Management and then was offered a job in November to work in the same department in the Lab Notebook Archive. I'm currently a temp worker on a 2-year contract but my exec. director said I have a 90% shot of getting a full time position. As soon as they get the head count, I'm in so it's looking good. I really like the whole process from discovering the API all the way to post-market analysis so I'm just finding a way in and then I'll grow as time goes on. My boss has big plans for me so it's exciting.

Cool. I started out at then Schering Plough as a process chemist in 2005, also as a temp. I get the impression most people start as temps these days. Just don't let them give you the run around, as I see it all too often, and even moreso at the generic company I worked for.

I started learning more about the business side of things after I moved to a gerneric company though about 2 years ago. Just keep your mind open and doors will open for you.

Grad school isn't necessary most of the time, but it cannot hurt either. I'm currently finnishing my MS and MBA, with only 6 credits left.

Good luck in pharma, things are much more brutal than when I started.

I'm actually currently enrolled in an MBA program. After this semester, I will only have 3 classes left. I know here at BI they have crazy incentives for schooling, they will literally pay for anything I want to take, and your degrees actually have a positive impact on the amount of vacation time you get. I've heard that working at a generic company really teaches you a lot because they run so bare-bones most of the time so you are forced to learn many roles and be well-diversed.

My exec. director and I have been very close since I started here as an intern because I sat in the office next to hers. She has certainly taken a liking to me, as have other people in the department and company, I assume mainly because they have told me I was the most productive intern they've ever had haha. They all seem to see a lot of potential in me, and she's made it clear to me that she has had conversations with VP-level management about making sure I stay at BI and continue to develop. Right now, I'm in a good place and the only negative's I see are that I'm not full-time yet and my loans are outrageous.

I've helped this company actually turn the corner and be profitable as well. Leaving on a good, albeit short notice seems like a good idea.

The work I did was hardly trivial to this company: I directly formulated and submitted 3 new generic drugs in the span of about six months. It's time for me to move on though, as self employment has become more profitable and makes it more sense to spend more time on that.

Do you sense a layoff coming around the corner that maybe you can be a part of? I had my resignation letter typed up and ready to turn in but then caught wind of an upcoming layoff and stuck around 2 more months. Had a choice to stay with the company but I chose to get laid off for that fat severance check and a better opportunity with a new employer the next biz day.

Anyway, it's not like you need to put down an immediate end date for tax purposes or a new employer needs you to start right away, right? Just turn in your 2 weeks notice and if you don't care about keeping professional ties then don't show up for work for 2 weeks. I think it's more about giving payroll the needed time to properly transition you out from an accounting perspective. But you never you may randomly have an unforeseen business opportunity w/ people from the company you're leaving in the future.

This is great advice, unfortunately I think you're a little late to the party based on the OP has already followed through.

Put in 2 weeks then take off and never be heard from again....if you make triple $$$$ on your side jobs then your current one is not worth hanging on anyway....but you better hope your alternative works out or else back to the unemployment line you go.....
