Quitting the day job today...
 

Any ideas on how to do this nicely? I'll be giving no notice...

I already have a letter of resignation typed up, and my bosses like me. I have started doing my own thing recently on the side, and I'm making more than triple what I earned at my day job. The work is sustainable too, so it's not like I'm worrying or will be anytime soon.

The only added costs will be to make up for my lost benefits, but I feel gaining 40 hours a week of free time is more than worth it as a result.

How long have you been working there? Seems weird to not just give a standard two weeks notice, especially if you have already been doing both without an issue.

I've given my 2 weeks at another company, and it really didn't matter much.

Personal reasons, as well as sexual harassment claims (not against me, but my coworker to against my boss) were the final push to get me out. Just not the stress I need to deal with anymore. I would not dare even try to get a recommendation out of that guy.

I've helped this company actually turn the corner and be profitable as well. Leaving on a good, albeit short notice seems like a good idea.

Be an adult and give your two weeks notice. It is a professional courtesy. If your employer chooses to let you go early (as some companies will do) that is their choice and will not hurt you at all (as per your own statement).

If you don't give the two weeks notice your boss that "likes you" can become an enemy very quickly.

Agree with the other responses. If your position is anything but trivial, there is no way to resign "nicely" without giving notice. I think you already knew that.

Think reverse, would you like it if they would say: we dont need you anymore bye.


Two weeks is the least you can do.

In the netherlands its 1 month by law!

Depending on the company, this may be standard procedure based on the type of work that someone might be doing.

I'm going to go against the grain and disagree with everyone on the 2 week notice thing. In this day and age I wouldn't be surprised if you gave your 2 weeks and they went ahead and told you to leave immediately anyways. Companies are only looking out for themselves and unfortunately employees should be doing the same.

With that being said I hope you're not underestimating the costs of health insurance when you're not part of a group plan and you're not losing out on matching retirement contributions. Best of luck!

I didn't think I'd get such unanimous responses. I talked to my boss, and will only continue employment for just one week more as per his request, only seeking a replacement for them.

The work I did was hardly trivial to this company: I directly formulated and submitted 3 new generic drugs in the span of about six months. It's time for me to move on though, as self employment has become more profitable and makes it more sense to spend more time on that.

Health insurance here isn't that great. I'm well aware how much a good plan costs too. 401k was actually my biggest concern, as I contribute the yearly maximum. The plans here for investment are limited though compared to options offered by a self 401k, and I invest outside my employment as well.

Can you share what your self employed business deals with? Is it something that may be useful to members here, or are your customers mainly other companies?
