I still think people will be able to choose between manual and auto as this doesn't affect trim levels across the rest of the subi range.

Great news though because it'll make Toyota be a bit more competitive with pricing. My predictions now for manual versions including on-road costs...

Base model Toyota 86: $35k
Higher grade Toyota 86: $38-39k
Subaru BRZ: $40k

Only say that because the WRX still needs to be more expensive in my opinion, at 44k. There'll be a few differences between the higher grade 86 and the BRZ (so salesmen can convince you that it's apples and oranges), and probably some interior stuff to justify the 1-2k premium. It'll be stuff that aren't Toyota dealer options.

I still say if its not sub 30k drive away then forget about even bringing it here.

Anything more and there are too many other cars avail, that offer more space, more power, better resale/parts.

Needs to be cheap to smash the market wide open like the Excel did 15+yrs ago.

Sorry to burst the dream... Aus Toyota PR dude already said they are working on a price starting with a 3..... but I do fully agree with you:s

As Subaru dude said ... we aim to get 25 year olds into the car and to do this they will need to make the car more affordable!!!

Not going to happen. For it to be sub-30k it would need to shift serious volume, which it won't. The Excel only succeeded because the domestic manufacturers neglected to see the market for a small A-to-B car, and what's important to people in this segment. They kept pumping out Falcadores without putting together a serious small car offering.

How long have Mazda sold the MX5 in Australia? It starts at 45k+ and is comparable in specs. They wouldn't bring it in if they weren't making money off it, because it certainly isn't a halo car.

They don't want this car stealing sales of their volume sellers either, which it might do if it was too cheap. Plenty of people buy Yarii (I have decided that is the plural of Yaris) and Corollas who would be interested in the 86 if it were around the same price. Not a good idea because they rely on that volume to sell them at the prices they are.

I could keep going on... but sub-30k isn't going to happen.

Don't get me wrong, I want it to be as cheap as possible, but stupid statements like "if its not sub 30k drive away then forget about even bringing it here" have no place in serious conversation.

Cheaper than a Rukus? I don't think so.

86 will be a low volume car like the Rukus. I expect it to be a little more expensive due to it being a sports car.

Kia Koupe IS $28K

Come on if KIA can sell FWD Kia Koupe SIS for $28k i think most brain dead people would part with $35k for a Toyota that is a real SPORTS CAR.So $35k
in a market that Mazda mx5 cost $42k ,Toyota can be fairly sure they will sell
and sell well.
I think any drive away price under $37k is great value when you compare true sports cars.
Tell me what you think?

Agreed! I personally think even 37k drive away is too good to be true. However with reports the BRZ in full spec will be cheaper than a WRX, 37k for an 86 is seeming more and more likely. At this price, the 86/BRZ is worth every cent!

The concept of wanting more for less is damaging to manufactures trying to build a good product, but are forced to cut corners to meet consumer's unrealistic expectations.

You want a cheap price; you'll get a cheap product. You want something with quality engineering, design and finish, then expect to pay for it! I would love the 86/BRZ to be <30k, but its time to be realistic people. If you want to spend <30k on a sports coupe, buy a Kia...

Rant over.

So mid 30,000 is good value for a car we haven't even seen yet and have little too compare too.

Only pre production stuff that will change.

These marketing guru's have it all over you lot far and square.

I seriously hope this car does everything it is claimed to be able to do but is mid 30,000 an affordable sports car, personally no i dont think so.

You slap this baby on the market for $29,990 drive away and sales numbers will all but triple that of 37-39,990 drive away.

A price anywhere near the price of Falcons, Commodores, Camry's, Aurion, Liberty etc is what will kill this 86 before it even starts.

It would need to be priced similar although slightly more then a Corolla

But as ive mentioned before, it all depends on what mid 30k buys you.

Please tell me who was the last manufacturer selling a car as good as the 86 for under $30k during the last 2 decades????

And the 86 is competing with the cars you mentioned above??

Top spec Corollas are slightly over $30k drive away. U agreed that 86 should be slightly more exxy so mid 30k is too high?? I'm lost.

The cars he mentioned are bigger, roomier and more powerfull that the 86. Save a few enthusiasts, noone else will care if this can handle well or drive good if it's over priced..
Problem is, marketing and car companies in Australia in general have most of your concept of price a little skewed and by the balls. Is the 370z worth 70k here? Really? I don't think so..

Sports cars are always a niche and historically sports cars always carry a premium over volume sellers, rightly or wrongly.

Ppl looking at a practical transport won't be interested in the 86 no matter how cheap it is. And if u wants a sports car, u wont care about those cars so why bother mentioning corolla, Falcons etc.

MX5 has "poor value" too compared to say a WRX but after 23 years they are still being made.

So IMHO expecting it to sell below $30k is wishful thinking.

Ps. I personally thing 370z is overpriced!!

370 is way way way over priced should be the same if not less thdn a wrx.

Mx5 is way way over priced.

And mate we all agreee with you australians get the shaft and balls when it comes to pricing for cars.

An audi a5 in the states is worth half if not more the what we pay.

Nothing we can do about it.
