When the Car PC trend was new and fresh, a company called Drivesoft made a great attempt to go mainstream but never caught on. Probably because the PCs were run on windows software that was problematic and clunky at times for the average user and they were extremely sensitive to voltage fluctuations. They did create something pretty cool that your post reminds me of... A plug in device with customize able software for 30 programmable outlets. We couldn't interface with CAN but we used relays and tied directly into motor leads and solenoids to control tons of features like windows, air ride, interior/exterior lighting, A/C, and Start/Stop. It was great for full custom builds because we would eliminate tons of switches allowing for sleek design work but not for everyday driving.

I just think Drivesoft was ahead of the time and the technology. With current technology and better OS and faster processors and new ways to interface with the vehicle with systems such as CAN BUS we will see OEM manufactures integrating these features into more and more vehicles.
