Yep as long as it is atleast an M 2005 or newer motorcycle helmet you're fine. The HJC CL-16 is a great one to buy that is inexpensive and will do the job, I, and several others I know, have one.
You can't use them at Summit Point or another racetracks, there you need an "SA" rated helmet, but all local autocrosses, including SCCA, an "M" rated helmet is fine. Noone has ever checked my insurance, I think it's just a disclaimer for the website, and likely it is in the blah blah legalese in the waiver you sign in the morning.

In the end I recommend going without any of the nannies since they really screw up control of the car, but if you're scared of spinning out of control that's a good way to start. People spin out all the time though and it's completely safe. If they see you deliberately being dangerous they'll disqualify you, but spinning out is most definitely not deliberate! A lot of the autocross sessions will have instructors on hand to help you if you want. Also, some of the more senior drivers are usually happy to ride along. Since our cars are still relatively uncommon you might have a lot of people that will want to ride along anyway .

Noone is likely to check it, but I think the helmets are only "good" for 10 years. I wouldn't worry about it as long as it is in good shape

What tires are you guys going to run this year?
I want to get a summer set with some AutoX-friendly tires but I might stick with the stockers this summer just to burn them up. I did one event last year and I had a lot of fun sliding around once I decided to stop wishing for more grip. |

I am picking up another set of stock wheels this weekend. I'll be shoeing them in some of the new star specs, the ZII's. Will likely start the season on the stock all seasons to try things out, and then get the ZII's about a month in.
For street tires, the Dunlop Direzza ZII's or the Hankook RS-3's are the go to for any autocrosser. The Direzza DZ101's are the poor man's star specs, which I ran on my Miata last year, which are decent. I would recommend getting an extra set of wheels of some kind, and shoeing them in some good tires though. Nothing you can do to your car can make a bigger impact than the right tires, a lesson I learned last year autocrossing. Planning on going just larger than stock on the ZII's, 225/45/17's.
