86 is definitely a marketing strategy. This car doesn't resemble an AE86 really at all. Toyota picked their most popular car name and followed suite.

They even start referring to it in Japanese as the "Hachiroku" I think it does confuse people when you say it, but then I like to think of it as a direct descendent. Kinda like when you say "Celica." Some of you might think of the 7th gen Celica in your mind and some of you might think of the 5th gen 1989 Celica. A year down the line from now, someone will say "I drive a Hachiroku" People will just ask "oh the new one?"

I say the AS1 or FT86, is more of the poor man's Porsche Cayman. Virtually identical height, length, and all around form factor. And also the original goal of project 086.

Also, no one else in the world other than BRZ/FT86 forums will even know the name "AS1" Some name in the form of 86 will win out at the end.

i could see the 86 competing in rally as a direct competitor to the mustang v6, or similar RWD car... the 86 handles well when no on pavement, we have seen small clips of it on snow, and it does really well, i wouldn't be surprised if this car sees a large variety of motorsports
back to the topic, the car was never made to go offroad, but its characteristics make it good off road, light great suspension, LSD, ect...

the celica will have to be revived as awd turbo in 5-6 years for it to be successful and doesn't steal hype and popularity from the 86
plus if toyota was releasing a awd turbo car, subaru wouldn't be too happy now would they ;P
I believe I read or heard somewhere that Subaru was "thinking" of putting the brz in rally competition in the future.

that's subaru, pretty much everything they make has or does participate in rally, just wouldn't be subaru if they didn't, it will do well, i just don't wanna see a bbrz in rally cause tree+car= many tears.... lol

it will probably do well, the mustang v6 does pretty well...

Toyota is ZN6 apparently and Subaru is ZC6. I think I read an article saying an engineering CAD drawing of the car was once titled as "AS1"

Where'd you get that? I have yet to hear ZN6, every reviewer mentioned AS1. Hell, our forum header says AS1!

Edit: Here's CnDs article where they said the Subaru guys themselves called it AS1...

yes that's correct, and then the next guy spread it as fact.. and on and on from there. everyone keeps defending it because those who say "as1" have high post counts. it's at the top of the page because it was a subaru internal project code..

a car code-named “AS1,” which will be sold in the U.S. as both the Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S

IMO - i don't think as1 will be around long especially because those who use it can't define it correctly most of the time

Oh! FIA has a new R-GT class in the WRC specifically for 2WD GT-type cars. Lotus Evora (!?!) is the first to homologate for it.

Rally BRZ/86 coming up?
