Please do tell me how resting your hand on the shifter is bad for your transmission.

two hands on the wheel is safer, regardless of "macho" attitudes.

I don't see any need to always have your hand on the shifter.... if you really feel that it makes for faster shifting, sure, during the time when you are shifting leave your hand there while you're doing that. I don't see why you need to be constantly shifting so much that you never take your hand off the shifter though.

Google the answer I thought it was bullshit at first also but there are a lot of articles and science behind it. I'm at dinner so no time at the moment to explain it myself.

The wheel is formed for the 10&2 position. It's actually pretty natural feeling in this car.
Usually left hand on the wheel at varying positions and the right hand either on the center console at the ready, or tucked under my right thigh.
Weird, I know...
I guess that started years ago driving cheap manuals with no armrest.

On the interstate I drive with my left hand at 7.

In the corners I drive with my hands at 9 and 3.

The Miata, one hand at 7:30. The FR-S, one hand at 9. The steering is much stiffer, and I need a little extra leverage, plus the wheel sits a bit lower anyway.

In both cars, I'll do 9 and 3 when I'm getting spirited. I find with the FR-S, I use two hands quite often even when I'm not really getting on it, just because of the steering effort.

I did not say i put my hand on the shifter. Two hands on the wheel is for more control. I'm not a daily race car driver so control is only needed when its snowing and even then I drive slow to avoid mishaps.

My right hand rests on the e-brake for when needed to shift. Left hand on 10 o clock.

Guilty. I drove manual in high school, and even then I still liked two hands. Love taking hard turns or running through twisting roads that way.

If I'm just driving around town, this is how I drive (although my hand isn't on top of the knob but instead holding it like a pistol).

Subaru's have always been notorious about resting your hand on the shifter. Apparently it causes excess wear on the syncros and other portions of the transmission. Subaru even put a comment in the manual. I don't think it is in the BRZ/FR-S manual, but I don't do it out of habit now.

In addition, I really hope that you are joking with your earlier comment about people using both hands to drive a car suck at driving.
