Try another state. Members here did it and drove it the 1000miles back. But if you're trading, I dont think that would be the best option

I've found KBB to be a little optimistic on their trade-in values. Edmunds seems to have a more realistic value for trade-ins and private sales. The black book values that dealerships use is closer to the values posted on Edmunds. But in the end, you will always get more by selling privately than trading it in.

There's retail, private party, trade in, and auction values. If the dealer has no interest in selling the truck, they would take it to auction. They have transportation and auction fees they incur as well.

CarMax might actually sell your truck, so you'd get close to trade in value. If you find a buyer yourself, you might get private party value (but everyone wants to haggle), and lastly dealers will put it on their lot at retail - but likely come down in price to close a deal.

That's the game. Nothing fishy. Dealers are taking a risk by taking a trade in (if it needs work they don't know about, or something breaks a week after they buy it from you) - so they like to cushion their offer to offset some risk. And they like to make money on the new car sale, the financing, the used car trade in, where ever they can.

I just signed my paperwork and will be picking up my FR-S next week. I also had a lease turn in with assumed equity. What I've noticed at 3 different dealerships is .... they don't care about your trade or you for that matter. If you walk ... they will have a line of buyers waiting to buy the car...on THEIR terms. That is the problem with these 1st year desirable cars. If you were buying a camry (no offense to anyone that owns one) ... you could negotiate and get better deals. I still paid MSRP thankfully.

Awesome! Sometimes the best negotiating tactic is to walk out.

Also true. Honestly, I don't often confirm with absolute statements. Although, I've found that selling your car yourself yields larger benefits than hoping for a decent trade in value.
