I had an old mercedes back in the day that depended on vacuum level to modulate shift pressure. so if you had a vacuum leak your shifts would be too soft and flare, or sometimes it'd be the opposite and shift so hard you'd chirp the tires.

i know the autos have that vacuum pump under the hood so maybe there's a connection there?

Fluid has definitely been replaced. Bright red. But yeah definitely something with pressure and clutch bands of some shit
