You haven't lived until you've timed this thing
![]() Notice: You're looking at the back of the engine. 2 chains on a whole engine? No primary/secondary chain nonsense? No balance shafts? No chain driven oil pump? No chain driven power steering or A/C? Ha! As I said, I haven't timed an FA20 yet, but looking at the procedure, I've timed way worse, at least it has timing marks, unlike a VW CCTA that has to be timed with a dial gauge in the cyl 1 plug hole and a caliper on the sprockets. |

What in the world is that Rube Goldberg monstrosity? I'll guess BMW or Mercedes.

![]() The B2 intake camshaft is the 2nd one from the bottom. You see that triangle near the front of the cam? That's the HPFP drive cam. Notice it has a peak about in the middle of the "zero lift range". Are you perhaps just on the wrong side of that? [Edit] Oh wait no it's not in the middle of the no lift range as the pump is driven at 90 degrees to the head, still, that puts the cam in an uncomfortable position versus the hpfp's spring. Good point about the pump. I had mine off when setting my timing so it had no influence over the ability to turn the cam. I really had no problems setting my timing. The service manual does assume the pump is off when setting the timing. He is having a problem with the LH bank intake which is where the pump is. I think you found his problem. |

The HPFP is not installed so that is not the issue. |

Anyway the wrong sized intake valves were somehow installed by IAG? They originally put 2014+ valves in and had to re-order the right size for the 2013 (2mm shorter). Curious if that could cause the cam to contact the rocker soon enough to throw off the timing mark...The RH sprockets both line up right with the arrows facing each other and the tick marks on top for the chain to line up. Its just this left side intake that is causing a mess. Also, a friend of mine works at a shop in Pittsburgh and they claim that when they timed a BRZ they ran into issues and basically had to contact Subaru and tell them their timing instructions were wrong and Subaru sent them new instructions but never made a STB for it like they said the were... I am waiting till tomorrow morning to get these "updated timing instructions". |

I could see the longer valves causing the cam to have less rotation in the nonlift zone but I would have expected both banks to do the same if it was the valves. As far as instructions are concerned, I followed the instructions in the TSB that I linked to a few posts back but they aren’t any different than the BRZ or Toyota manual. It just gives actual photos rather than just illustrations and clarifications on a few things. I didn’t have a single hang up doing mine. Everything is marked so well on this thing.
What other work was done? They put in 2014 valves in but did they maybe also put 2014 rockers in? The pivots also changed in 2014 but they don’t change the geometry at all. It’s really odd to me that all three other cams lined up perfectly. |

This is a very similar situation to where I've gotten myself into on timing up an FR-S.
I've got the chains on correctly per alignment with the marks on the cam gears to link but when I spin the motor over my Driver's bank Intake cam alignment on the face of the gear does not align with the exhaust mark. What I have done is that I have moved the adv/ret. within the gear/cam by trying to turn the cam into the zero lift position without the proper tool (I already know better, save the lesson, I'm an idiot sometimes.) so that one cam is out of phase with the other 3 which are still neutral where they should be. The gear is pissing out a bunch of oil and I can move it to get it align the marks on the faces of the gear but it returns. Now to the question.... If I put this thing all the way back together will the oil pressure return the gear to the proper position or have I destroyed this gear? |

No issues. No lights. Variable timing functions properly.
Cranked engine over until I had oil pressure just to be certain. |
