Is not like I want to get out of it as such, as even if I end up with both of them, and my financial situation does not change, then I will either pass it on to my wife or sell it. Easy!

To be honest with the lack of current supply you could make a few grand by selling a 0km one privately.

My dealer was very clear with me that if I don't like the car I get a 100% refund.

My 2 cents worth:
I ordered a GTS at the end of June, laid down $1k deposit, told to expect delivery around Dec/Jan
Last week got really pee'd off with the fact that Toyota were deleting the spare wheel and I'd end up with the inflation kit.
Rang around local dealers and found an 86 that was currently being built and not sold.
Contacted my first dealer and got the run around and they weren't going to let me out of the contract until I told them that I knew about the wheel deletion and spec change. Only then did they capitulate and give me my money back.
See this thread for the full story: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12204
I wouldn't be laying down two deposits unless you have it in writing that you can back out of the contract if you secure another car somewhere else.

I had it written into my contract that I can cancel the order prior to X date regardless of reason. Ask the dealers for the same?

Then, not only are you stuck with a second car, you are also repaying it at an inflated rate.

I'd suggest going to them in good faith, and be upfront. Some dealers may happily let you cancel, as it will give them access to a car which they can easily offload.
Not entirely accurate, the new legal definition of the "Pending Finance" clause, also states that the finance must be suitable to the customer's personal circumstances and must be from a finance company of their choosing.

Updated legislation in regards to the Responsible Lending Guidelines prohibits any supplier from forcing a customer to accept finance that haven't agreed to. You must also sign a Privacy Act of 1988 Agreement giving your consent for the finance manager/Finance Company to use your personal information and perform a credit check. Fines of up to $150,000 apply for any company that does not follow these laws.

But dealerships can insist that you prove you have made reasonable attempts to obtain finance and not just told them that you can't get it.

Honesty is truly the best option and most dealers will fully understand a customer wanting to find a vehicle sooner given the current situation with the 86 lead times.

They will always be able to re-sell an 86 to someone else, but they will not necessarily want to lose your sale to another dealer
