I am a huge fan of pop up headlights, but it doesn't look right to me on these cars. At the same time, I am a fan largely based on how they looked closed so it is hard to totally dismiss the idea based on photos with them up.

I never liked the look, glad US regulations outlawed them lol. I think the last car that had the was the C5 Vette.

I actually like it a little bit.. but I'm weird I guess. I mean, I prefer the 86 face over the Scion FR-S.. and that certainly doesn't seem to be the majority

No they didn't. They're still legal.

Manufacturers have stopped making them because the European Union passed a bunch of restrictions requiring vehicle front ends to be softer to protect pedestrians. It's prohibitively costly (but not impossible) to design a pop up headlight that meets the EU regulations.

So they could, but there's also really no point. The whole reason for pop up headlights was to be able to meet headlight height restrictions at night, but drop them out of the slipstream when not needed and allow a lower, sleeker front end for improved aerodynamics. This was when headlights were several inches across. Now the height restrictions have relaxed, and the headlights themselves are so tiny they can be placed just about anywhere without increasing drag. You don't need a light to pop up when it's so small you wouldn't notice the movement anyway.
