I would recommend NOT doing this. I've heard of people doing it to their MT cars before, but it's always been in the context of disaster!

Example: Heard stories of people with remote start installed on their MT, went to pick it up from the shop, hit remote start, car jumped curb. That person was up in arms because THEY always park their car in neutral (who does that?!), but typically everyone will park it in gear.

The way I see it, it's a recipe for disaster--at some point, you or someone who has your keys are going to forget that it's in gear when you hit that remote start...

A properly installed MT remote start will not operate if the car is in gear. Unfortunately (as with several things) many are not properly installed.

I leave it in first; that way you can use engine braking to slow. You only need a light touch on the throttle to keep car moving.

Reminds me of back-in-the-day, on the farm, my mother wanted to borrow my 1948 Chevrolet, with a perfect grill, to go into town. It was parked in the barn, right up to a bench. I always parked my car in first gear. The starter switch was on the floorboard to the right of the gas pedal. She was used to driving an automatic.

Yep, so much for my perfect OEM grill .........

Once moved the 58 Chev from the road into the driveway on the starter alone. Anybody that drove MT before the invention of the clutch starter lockout probably has at least one tale of woe.

My old Neon srt4 was a MT with a remote start. I just left it in neutral all the time with the hand brake up never had an issue. I did adjust the ebrakes a few times over the period I had the car to make sure it couldn't roll with the car not being in gear.

Especially with push-button starts I can see the potential for disaster. I'm just glad I can still do the starting-while-in-gear trick.

Man, I really half-assed that post. Sorry.

That clutch interlock is critical with push-button start because it just cranks away on its own. With a key, you can let go quickly if the car lurches in gear.

When I was a kid I witnessed my dad effortlessly drive home after his clutch cable broke. I've used that trick a few times as an adult. I'm kind of attached to that ability. Mostly sentimental, I guess.
