if you ever have to ask yourself if this is a good idea it is most likely a bad idea and you are gonna have a bad time

It pays to remember that with a salvage title any part or parts can be missing, exchanged, replaced, rebuilt, or installed after salvaging them from the bottom of the sea, a rainforest, or the siberian desert. This includes odometers! Mileage on a salvage title car can be inferred, but at best it can only be an educated guess regarding accuracy. There is no recourse. This is the ultimate example of "buyer beware"!

Sort of. CSG is a certified installer; I think Mike said they charge about $1000 for install. Which, for the complexity and time requirements of the install, I feel isn't a terrible amount to pay.

The part I don't like is you have to use Edelbrock's CARB tune for the warranty to apply. It makes sense why they insist on that, but I would want a catless header (probably ACE) and Delicious tune, so I'd be out a warranty. Granted, I'm over 36K miles, so I'd be out a warranty regardless.

tl;dr strat61caster's Risk Assessment: if you have to ask how much it costs you can't afford it.

Be patient, don't get in over your head, pay the car off, have 6 months living expenses in liquid cash savings, invest 6% towards.... zzzzzzzzzzzz.....

And in X years you'll have excellent confidence about the reliability of a supercharged FA20.

Is this a good idea?..

Last time I change my oil @ dealer they broke my magmatic drain bolt.... /bang head

Unless you know the mechanic in person & he has a reputation for his work. This should be a giant "NO".

I can say that the Subaru master tech in Vegas can do that, but most places aren't like that.

I saw the title thinking "Hmm maybe I can help". So I started reading, until I cam to the word super charger. I'm assuming you are young, we all do crazy things with money when you are young. I can't help you with your mistake. But, in all fairness, I do wish you the best. It is your money after all.

so chalk it up as a hair brained scheme. I did decide to go talk with the dealership folks, had some time to kill and such, and it was on the way home from work. Anyways, they were all on board and somewhat excited until the service manager said absolutely not. In any case, I'm definitely not in the "I need a new car" group, just was thinking out loud I guess.

thanks for the input

Well CSG would be one of the ones I would trust to ask a fair price and do a good job (based upon their reviews and participation here) but Atlanta to California is a long haul to have a SC installed. As much as I would hope that the other "Certified" installers would be as good there is no assurance they are. It could end up costing way more with somebody else. The warranty also stipulates that all repairs must be done by the Certified Installer so there is even more cost. Just not convinced that you would come out of the deal all that well if you had a crappy installer.

Now, all that aside if I had known about this when I first bought my car I may have been straight to the nearest certified installer and had that puppy slapped in (before I knew I really didn't need a SC for anything). I would not however trade/sell my car to buy a new one to have it installed. That is just plain silly economics since the hit you would take on the car would more than pay the costs if you ever had to replace an engine.
