The lights turn on when your car turns on because that is also when the 12v adapter plugs (cigarette lighter) turn on.

Firstly, I purchased 2 red LED strips, each approx 9-10" long. Also, some light gauge wire.

There is a 12V jack in the glove box in your FR-S. I cut a lighter adaptor plug off something that was broken (a cheap car vacuum), spliced and soldered to wires to the two LED strips.

Then snaked the driver side one thru the console (was a bit challenging), and attached to the bottom of the dash with zip ties/two sided tape. Same with passenger side , stuck under the dash just below the glove box. Zip tied wires in place where I could, plugged in behind the dash, and voila!

The lights go on whenever the key is turned. The red is not distracting being on all the time. I am very capable electrically but chose not to use the door or dome light switch. If I was going blue I might not want it always on. Not to mention too many colours if blue was added to the mix. I read somewhere that exposure to blue light at night is bad for your circadian rhythm (sleep patterns).

Incidentally, in my WRX 2 years later I had the dealer install the OEM kit. That was only because it is a leased car.

I have 2 12V adaptors sitting behind the glove box. Plug in one and the dashcam works, hidden wires in the "A" pillar. Plug in the other and I have floor lighting.
