Sage advice.

This is actually the direction I'm going. I used spacers and an extension under the front of the seat rails in my 240Z. I understand now that it is frowned upon and I can see why. Submarining is also a concern.

My plans are to extend the telescoping feature of the steering column while maintaining all the stock features, including airbag. There is a balance between collapse to prevent impalement and enough rigidity to support airbag deployment. This will still be my daily/XC rig.

Thanks, guys! There is lots here for me to chew on.

@Ultramaroon "a friend of mine" "my plans" no shame in being American sized. Let me know how you plan to extend the steering wheel. I have short arms and would like know how you get it done.

I was just having some fun.

I will let you know for sure. Gotta get all the column assembly out of a wrecked one and study it. I've been underneath mine a few times and it looks doable.

I've gained about 90 lbs in 10 years of happy marriage.

In an accident, if one thing moves and the other doesn't, bad things happen to the person in between. So either it can all flex (reclining seat, no cage, OEM belts), or it's all solid (fixed back seat, cage, harnesses), but you shouldn't mix between the two.

It really is all very deliberately designed to work in harmony. Truth be told, I'm torn about the whole undertaking. Seating position is 90% there and I'm still thrilled I can fit at all.

The problem I found was shoulder width when I looked. Even the larger seats don't have much shoulder room, and I frankly just gave up looking.

Can you just take the stock seats off the rails and connect them directly to the floor?

I'm also currently trying to find a decent fixed back for my fat ass

I'm anywhere between a 38-42 waist depending on the pants. 6'1 235lbs. Needs to be FIA approved as well, which is what makes it tough.
