I recently bought Wasteland 2 on Steam, my first Steam experience. I hate Steam. HATE STEAM. Wanna play a game. Oh, look, 8 hours of download to update it. Fuck you, Steam.
Wasteland 2 is OK. More nostalgic than Fallout, about as good as Fallout 2, and a lot more complex. Often frustrating to play, even on Rookie, which is what I'm playing at. Too repetitive. Combat is too damn slow. Steam has been so frustrating, I think that will be the last game I purchase.

My biggest problem with Steam is my uncontrollable habit to buy every game they put on sale! I have not paid "first run retail" for a game in probably 5 to 6 years now because I'm willing to wait until its a $10 game. I just attack the backlog...

But I hear you, if you buy something that you want to use immediately, you just gotta wait. If you have a fast connection it's not so bad, but the new wave of digital content is asterisked with this one inconvenient caveat, frequent downloading and/or buffering. If it's just the random updates that bother you, just put Steam into offline mode and it won't look for updates. Put it into online mode every once in a while and update everything, then back to offline mode. If you play infrequently enough that this happens every time you fire it up, well... I don't know what software these days doesn't check for updates when it's started. |

I'm finally getting a Samsung SSD for my PC... 850 Evo with 500GB. Excited to see that come in, even though it will be after Christmas. My current hard drive is a few years old, and I'm not sure I trust it for very much longer. I keep it backed up though. I just notice the noticeable "loading from hard drive" lag on textures, etc while playing. It will be the first time I'm actually getting full use out of my SATA III ports on my MB too.
(I'm trying really really hard not to look at Steam as well) edit: going to post my build specs at the moment. Haven't done that in a long time. First built this personal rig in 2010, and have a few changes over the years. Biggest change was in early 2013, my previous mobo fried, so I went ahead and updated my board and processor then. Case: Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower MoBo: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z77 Processor: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge Quad-Core 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 7850 2GB Storage: 2 x Hitachi GST Deskstar HD31000 IDK/7K (SATA II) 1TB (each) |

I have the same processor/ram/mobo (maximus version) SLI 660ti watercooled, etc. Built it almost two years ago with an intel ssd 520 at the time. It's quite literally the fastest computer I've used in recent years. Hard drive makes all the difference. I can boot in about 12 seconds. Programs load instantly. Games load extremely fast. It's exactly how it should have been. Now that prices are coming down you can get a larger size for MUCH less... Get the biggest one you can find. I would only choose from Intel, Samsung (evo), or Crutial. |
