I bought my S2000 when it was one year old, with only 4800 miles on the odometer, for $21,300. And given how far vehicle performance has progressed in the last 10 years (WRX, Mustang, MS3, etc) I don't think it's unreasonable to desire it's performance to be on par with the S2000 (a sports car designed in the 90s). Though without a forced induction power option (or a curb weight under 2500 lbs) I don't see how it can match the S2000.

Also, the S2000 still IS a blast to drive

I don't agree with any of this, except "the s2k is still a blast to drive part."

I was comparing a new s2k to an FT-86.

I don't believe that ten years of technological advancements in LFAs and 458s and McLarens is going to turn a $20k car into a $30k. And I'm not even adjusting for inflation on that $30k.

My point was, and always has been, to take the car for what it is. So far, it looks like the FT-86 is going to be a blast to drive.

FWIW, the October 2011 issue of _Car_ magazine says that the FT-86 will have "around 200 hp and 170 ft/lb torque." Their info is probably old, but I like that torque number.

Edit: They also said that there was a lightweight Type R "in the pipeline."

That Type R looks like its fast as hell. The s2k is a good bit faster than the FT which makes sense.

Those cars have been driving on the Nordschleife a little bit more then the FT86 (understatement) so it's pretty normal for them being faster.

I'm thinking not much more. take away the cage and aero, add sound deadening, carpet and backseat.

Subtract 150 lbs for the massive rollcage, add ~75 lbs for interior weight reduction... 2350 lbs? INSANE. lol

Also plus the weight of the passenger seat and rear bench, that should be where most of the extra weight is.
