I have a manual and drive it I hilly and congested Hong Kong. I rented the automatic when I went to Australia, and while it's fine, I feel that it really dampens innate character, involvement, and purpose of the car. Manual all the way for this car.

I've tried that a number of times, but it just did not work. I don't know why it would work to be honest. I think it's a misinformation.

Late to the party but I drive an auto and I enjoy it. Would I have prefer a manual, sure but there were many reasons that made the decision for me to get it as an auto. There are pros and cons to be and it will always be a personal choice. As Ultramaroon said way earlier if you're even asking this question it's probably best you do or learn it and then decide if you want it as a manual otherwise you'll always have this lingering doubt in your head about it.
Main reason I went auto was I wasn't going to be the only person driving this and the price difference between the base model and the RS 2.0 which was available only as an Auto wasn't nearly as drastic and so I went with that. |

I truly feel the auto in this one is the best I've ever experienced. By second gear the torque converter is completely locked and the shifting in manual mode is crisp and already faster than the best, lightest manual in existence. The only thing faster is a DCT but I've never had the pleasure.

While I agree it is more engaging and some magic is lost not having the 3rd pedal and shift gates, in manual mode it's a pretty good automatic for aggressive driving. The handling aspect of the car is unchanged, and it's still very fun and engaging. They could have tossed any crappy slushbox in here, but they put a decent one in here that can pull double duty for commuting and for fun driving.
My left leg sure is getting lazy these days, though...

One pro for an auto is that you're resale is probably a couple grand better when you try to trade or dump it.

Well if I drove the car as a daily driver... I would have opted for an automatic. Shifting during rush hour traffic in traffic jams is no fun...
