The original electric guitar was the Gibson Les Paul. Les actually built a prototype electric guitar known as "the log", because it was essentially a neck, a set of strings, pickups, a bridge and a big chunk of wood for the body. Les' mother is credited with saying, "Les, no one will ever buy that -- it doesn't look anything like a guitar." So he adapted the design to look more like a guitar and the Gibson Les Paul was born. The shape of the body was completely irrelevant to the sound, but of course it did matter aesthetically.



This is not true with any sort of hollow body electric guitar; the resonant chamber will alter the sound significantly by acting as an acoustic filter on the strings, which is then subsequently picked up by the pickups. So I would suggest that the Millenium Falcon should be cast out of one piece of inert heavy plastic or perhaps ceramic. The deader the better. Electric guitar bodies are sometimes made of maple because it is very stiff and very dead acoustically.

And finally, the reason that a Les Paul sounds different from a Stratocaster is due mostly to the pickups; they are wound differently and have a different response curve. Kind of like two microphones sounding different. If you wanted to make a Millenium Falcon guitar or bass guitar, it could be done and would sound as good as a Flying V or an SG. The body shape is irrelevant as long as it doesn't vibrate.

not so much in the case of a strat (but it's basically a block of wood). In let's say a Gibson Les Paul (I've owned a few, they have a back and a top made of different material so they are better suited to my example), the cavity will affect the sound slightly as will the top/back (material combo) and the weight relief method used (whether it's one solid block, swiss cheesed or the new standards with an actual cavity weight relief.


Don't get me wrong, these affect the guitar very little for those guitars (aside from the new LP standard vs a traditional) but there is still a slight difference in tonality(and I mean very slight, most wouldn't hear it) when compared one next to the other (same pickups, same pots, same setting, set-up, string gauge, etc.). A lap steel doesn't sound the same as a solid body electric guitar even if the rest of the guitar is exactly the same. In that capacity the sound would be affected to a certain extent by the quality of the material used (in this case cheap plastic).


You can grab a cheap china made guitar and change everything in it (done it before) with the pickup, pots, etc. of a Gibson les paul or a fender strat, but you still won't be able to attain the exact sound of those two. Will it be close (to a point where someone who doesn't have an ear for music won't make the difference), probably yes but someone with a developed ear will make the difference between both. You will be able to get the millenium falcon guitar sounding good if you put the work in it, but it will never sound exactly like a flying v or explorer, even if you use all of the parts from a flying v.

Minor difference but a differences nonetheless. Anyways we can also agree to disagree and I will gladly agree with you that the parts of significant tonal value for a guitar are the pickups, bridge/saddle, pots/electronics, type of neck support (bolted vs set neck) and the nut (technically the tuners also since they help with sustain and keeping the guitar in tune)
