one reason why the RX8 was dropped was because of its MPG. Mazda is reported to be working on a new rotary that will boost MPG by like 20% or so.

the main point is i guess we can kinda debate the small stuff all day. but when it comes down to it the twins are a niche product. if Nissan and or Honda were to enter this segment sales will most likely be stolen. Toyota will have less of the pie if you will, and with poor sales lend to discontinuation. i believe one of many reasons why the twins are doing good to decent in terms of sales is because the only other import that kinda competes i guess would be the MX-5 Miata (and some would say the FWD Si).

don't get me wrong, i welcome competition. but sales and shares maybe lost and than maybe no 2nd gen twins

You'll get no argument from me.
The fact that the Celica, Eclipse and Integra/RSX all disappeared (to be replaced by the likes of the 3G/4G Eclipse and the tC) do point to a shift away from small, tossable sport compacts, and towards larger, more "practical" "sporty" tourers.

I'm hoping the new Miata is a smash hit - maybe that will provide a shot in the arm to Toyota/Subaru to improve the Twins.

The Nissan IDx is just butt ugly. If it was out when I bought my BRZ, I wouldn't even have considered it. Even if it was 5-10K less.

Model could eventually see production

Nissan North American Vice President of Product Planning Pierre Liong recently said a production version of the IDx concept might not be "worth it" but Nissan's Corporate Vice President of Product Planning has now rebuffed his statements.

Talking to CarAdvice, Keno Kato said the model is "under preparation and development" but is still a 50/50 shot until it is officially green-lighted. Kato went on to suggest that Liong doesn't know what's he talking about because he is "under me" and Andy Palmer "is my boss" and has already said "we definitely will do one" of the iDX concepts.

Despite confirming that a production model is still under consideration, Kato said the biggest problem is deciding on which platform to use. Kato went on to say the model must be affordable because the Toyota 86 is "expensive enough to reject young people to access."

What I find interesting is that the North American VP of Product Planning said they can't justify it but the Corporate VP of Product Planning says there's a good chance it will be made.


I read that to mean: "We're building it but, as usual, North America probably won't get it"

No actually that was Andy Palmer who is apparently at the top of the food chain, and he's the one who said they would definitely do one of the IDx concepts.

Could use a 2.0-liter engine

According to a recent report, the production version of the Nissan IDx concept will lose its retro styling cues.

Citing company insiders, Motoring is reporting the model will feature modern and muscular styling which draws inspiration from the Sports Sedan concept.

While the IDx Freeflow concept was originally envisioned to use a petrol engine that displaced between 1.2- and 1.5-liters, the production model is rumored to adopt a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter unit that produces at least 181 bhp (135 kW). This would bring the model closer to its chief rival, the Toyota GT 86.

Little else is known about the car but it is expected to be launched in 2017 and ride on the same platform that underpins the next-generation Z sports car.

IIRC, the Sport Sedan gives us a clue of what the next Maxima would look like
