As far as Ethanol goes... I am a relative rookie so to speak. I run it in my car, I understand how it works in cars (advantages) and I know what is not so fun about it (disadvantage 30% more fuel usage= less MPG).

As far as weight... There is a fine line between light enough and too light... weigh balance is key... take rear engine cars... many of them actually under steer (atom v8 to name one) due to a light nose and heavy tail... there isn't enough weight to keep traction on the tires and they just slip over the tarmac instead of being squished down on it. Ideally I would like to put the front wheels on a scale and the rear ones on another scale and have it be within about 10-15 kilos of difference... kind of ridiculous, I know, but a boy can dream can't he?

200hp, 151tq and 2600lbs. That is what I had expected, but I had hoped for a lower curb weight. It's going to be a fun car but it's not going to be the featherweight screamer I and everyone had hoped. It will put up RX8 performance numbers, but hopefully for half the price.

Not directly comparable cars I know, but I was looking at this as a lower cost alternative.)
The steel wheels are the bare spec are HEAVY! So you can loose another 20-40lbs just with lighter wheels.

Plus, ditch the rear seats, thats another 30-40lbs, ditch the junk in the trunk (spare/jack/etc.) for another 30-50lbs, and maybe some lightweight bumper beams like they sell for Imprezas (have them on mine, saved ~20lbs each). This car can EASILY be down to 2500lbs

As for the brakes, vented rears would be nice, the conversion probably won't be that expensive either but I suspect all the cars sold here in the states will have them. But as others have said, this car probably just needs quality pads to out-brake pretty much everything out there. Don't need brembo's or other huge brakes unless you throw in a turbo motor with another 50+hp.

One thing to note: The "De-contented model" is a Type-RA version. Subaru almost always sells a Type-RA model STI in Japan. They usually have no stereo, no foglights, none of the amenities and are sold specifically for privateer rally racing. Here is a good example of a brochure for one:

The sad thing about these models is they are never sold outside of Japan

So I don't expect that no-content FT86 with the unpainted models to be sold anywhere outside of Japan either.

I'm not familar with DI enough to know if it makes a difference. I guess it can inject during compression to prevent pre-ignition.
I wasn't trying to knock of you at all. But there are people who would be not be aware of this fact and misunderstand.

To those that don't know. Current cars have knock sensors now and the ECU can detune engines for lower octane. This is not something DI related at all. There were cars that could do this in the 80's automatically, so it's not something to worry about one bit. Performance will be best on the recommended fuel even Fuel Economy will likely be better too.

I certainly hope not. This person was either authorized/told to do so beforehand or if not they should be promoted by now.

16 pages in 8 hours! Holly Crap!

Yo MOD! check genius world records see if theres a fastest growing theard records we may have one here

Thanks for the spec sheet it really helps in giving a good idea what might be availble USDM models.

If the spec sheeet for USDM is anything close its look quite hard to decide given the price range is resonable for high and low spec.

Im going to check back in a few hours just to see how many more pages come up for this.

The last item in "engine" category in the scans. I don't speak/read Japanese but the numbers checked out and it looked close enough in google translate.

燃料タンクの容量

I also couldn't figure out a lot of the dimesnions... I'm guessing ride height is one
1520/1540 might be front/rear track width

maybe another one... cargo capacity (I compared to mx5 actual specs)
ft86 130mm
mx5 135
rx8 125
crz 150

Good possibility the 'premium' spec is the only model we'll get here in Australia with options such as leather seats and sunroof etc. My guess is around $35,000 plus ORCs...

I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota was leaking these pages and images; it does drum up interest, hype, and talk about the car.

What would be smart on their part, would be if the specs being leaked were from an older preliminary brochure and that somethings may have improved what way when they do the presser for the car at Tokyo they can give the full, accurate specs for a little "fooled you".

Doubtful, I know, but it would be nice.

Who gave permission to more than 1 review company to post their review this week?....Exactly.
Very well stated. We are gabbing around the water cool aren't we? The timing of the embargo lift and the "leak" of all the info does seem to all work out very conveniently doesn't it? Not that I mind.

It's also suspicious that the photos have just the right amount of graininess so you can sort of make out what's there, but not really. It's 2011, even cell phones have 12MP cameras now.

Either way, I was prepared to wait another month for this info, so I'm ok with it.

With our luck, the US will only get the bottom spec. Fine for the tach, but I wouldn't mind some of the other top spec brakes (primarily the brakes).
We want the higher end spec...You want the front LED clearance lights, front fog lights, standard HIDS, leather steering wheel, aluminum pedals, . auto climate control, High spec frabric, auto alarm, Auto on\off lights, 6 speakers audio (low spec has 2 speakers), white rev counter with shift light and sport pedals. Top spec also has "smart entry and start" plus digital speedo and tach. Oh and it has the better brakes. Sure it is 45 pounds more in weight for the High Spec...but what is 45 pounds? nothing...
