It’s funny how people are whinging about people whinging... The people whinging about whingers are, in fact, whingers also!!

Easy solution – find member of one of the numerous forums who has not want of spare wheel. Exchange spare wheel with tyre goo. Done.

I want a spare, but prefer a space saver. So a mate of mine who lives out in the bush needs a spare wheel is going to buy a subie space saver and then we will swap. Done.

"One thing that won't change, however, is that Toyota will continue to fit the 86 GTS with the rubber mat introduced for Australian buyers that was intended to hide the spare wheel -- but without the big tyre-hiding hump."

that i like cause personally i would have taken out the tire and wouldn't have wanted the hump.

Finally a confirmation that the rubber mat will stay with no hump - this is indeed a bit of improvement over the whole situation.

I think I can live with no spare tyre, and trade-off will be a usable boot space.

Let's just hope that the tyre repair kit will work as intended.

"We hadn't seen the vehicle until some of our product planning people visited Japan late last year," Breen says. "They actually hadn't seen the spare wheel in the boot at the time, and we had not realised how much it intruded into the area, and we realised that, apart from cosmetics, it just wouldn't provide useable luggage space that you'd need to fit a full-size overnight bag and things like that.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this is the only change that ToyAU made to the car for our market. And they even sent people out to inspect the car but didn't open the boot..

Breen said a space-saver spare tyre was not available for the Toyota 86 [GTS]. "That option wasn't available to us," Breen says. "I can't tell you why. All I know is that the option for us was the tyre repair kit."
Aka they must have had a bigger profit margin on the GT. Shoulda/coulda just made it an option on all factory orders full/space saver/none.

Personally I'm happy the full size is gone, disappointed there's no space saver, but not too fussed, will just install one myself as I originally planned to do.

They looked at the boot but the car they inspected had the space saver. It only became apparent how much the full size spare stuck out when the first Toyota Australia cars arrived. That's when they made the decision to fit the boot line

It's just amazing that the so called "product experts" from Australia (or numnuts) never though of taking out the space saver while in Japan and ask them well what would it be like if the full size spare is in there???

I guess their trip is like a free company sponsored trip to Japan to enjoy themselves and the stuff-up that happens in the end ... well it's just too bad for the consumers!

I like how now we(GT Owners) will no longer get a boot liner >.> so we lose out on a spare and a boot liner what a load of shit.
