Every single person I've gotten to switch over to E0 has reported no chirps since.

And you don't need to send the gas off to anyone to test it, just use a pocket testing unit that most people who have boats or planes use.
I was on my third tank of ethanol free and the cricket noise still came back. Guess what I didn't pay extra to fill up with today? I'm sure it helps. But I do believe the issue is something else that may be further impacted by gas with ethanol in it. And I've also had the new pump put in.

Then it probably wasn't ethanol free. It doesn't seem to take much ethanol to cause the problem.

It's from an ethanol free gas station. All I know is I'm not paying for it again.

How much extra does it cost for 93 octane ethanol free compared with 93 E20?

It was about .30 a gallon here plus the 5 miles out of my way I have to go to get it.

Thanks.
If it was $3.70 for 93 octane E20 and $4 for 93 octane without ethanol then, apart from the extra 5 miles to get it, it costs the same.

The E20 contains 7% less energy and costs 7% less so you will get the same miles per $.

The 5 miles costs 65c or $1.30 if it's a 10 mile round trip.

That's a bit too mathematical for me to really want to care. Don't get me wrong I fully understand the arithmetic behind it. However, please understand I'm not a cheap person. If something cost more that's fine. So long as it does the job. That said, even if I got more miles out of the non ethanol, if it still made the noise, I would pay more to NOT have to go out of my way. Make sense?

That's fair enough, I would be the same.

I just think it's worth sticking with it a bit longer to make sure all the ethanol is out of the system.
The other thing I would do is add a tiny amount of quality low or zero ash 2T oil when I fill up, until the chirps have gone without it. I've mentioned this before and some people explode with indignation at the thought but i've put it in my 86 on principle, although we don't get the chirps here with ethanol very rare and then only in the low octane we can't use anyway.

One and 3/4 tanks of booze-free gas, filled up today with Shell V-Power. Used 1/4 tank of that mix, no crickets so far.

I haven't read the entire 2300+ posts (just a few pages) but here's my take:

I'm inclined to forgive the crickets as our cars' "quirk." Besides it's just some noise at idle and it doesn't even get into the cabin with the windows up. It doesn't cause the car to break down, lose power, cause damage to other parts, alter performance, be unsafe, etc.

Maybe our twins will go down in history as the one that had the crickets, something we can all laugh about when we're old and gray. I'm even inclined to have decals made that says "got crickets?" or "crickets inside" just for the humor of it.

Before getting my BRZ, the other option I was going for was the 3-door Audi A1 (yeah I know...glad I didn't go that route, but the STronic DCT was yummy...I digress...). I was reading their forums for a while and rattling windows when partially open was a common problem. I wouldn't want that, and dare I say that our crickets are the lesser evil. My point is: no car is perfect. I'm glad that the only problem we have in our cars is "just a little noise." Otherwise, its a beautiful, wonderful car from headlight to exhaust tip that makes us smile each time we get behind the wheel...

I find it hard to believe that at this point nobody has taken a pump apart and inspected one. Or that somebody in the aftermarket has not decided to make bank on some cheap-ass Chinese pump that does not chirp with some sort of "JDM" sticker on it, and sell that sucker for big bucks.

Then you probably didn't get E0 or you got a little ethanol in the tank.

The Ethanol is causing it...

Also keep in mind that you are going to get 10-20% better MPG from E0 then from E10 or E15, also better throttle response.

So you might save .30 cents on the gallon but you are going to pay for it in less MPG and less performance.

It's not a quirk, it's a fault caused by ethanol.
