Since we are talking about "hot boxes", a bad smell and throwing up - I'll tell a story -

It was a hot, humid day in July, in the swamps, on the south side of Ft Benning, Georgia.

As part of the IOBC (Infantry Officer Basic Course) we had four days of E&E (Escape and Evasion) training. They started off by herding us into a barbed wired fenced compound in the middle of a large swamp.

Now, the idea was for us to escape the compound and evade our pursuers through the swamp to safety (any paved road). Meanwhile, back at the prison compound they would give us live rabbits and raw rice to eat. Me and this ol boy from Kentucky knew how to skin a rabbit without a knife. A dude from NYC knew how boil rice, so we made stew.

During the day they would "interrogate" us. Which would consist of dragging us into a tent and yelling at us (like what our mother was like). If we didn't break, they would make us go out and balance on our knees on a log.

Those who tried to escape were quickly caught and brought back for more intense torture. They had collected up the rabbit guts and put them in a hole which was about 3' in diameter and 8' deep. Soon the Georgia heat made a smelly mess of the guts.

An attempted escapee would be handcuffed and placed in the hole. Then a barrel was placed over the hole and several other captors were made to pound on the barrel with clubs for a few hours. After a few prisoners were punished, the "pit" it became quite pungent with the smell of rotting rabbit guts and throw-up.

^^^^^ That sounds disgusting. Not to mention causing hearing damage, but then again discharging firearms without ear protection will do that too. Plenty of cases of tinnitus.

The moral of the story is lots of soldiers get hearing loss. And don't eat surstromming unless you're a drunken crazy viking.
