I was initially interested in the rotating mass discussion based on tire weights, not wheel weights so much. Generally the wheels we all use in CS don't change size, but they do get lighter. Tires on the other hand are a greater variable. As we seek to increase traction with wider tires, weight increases as well. Is a 225 faster then a 215 even if it's 3lbs more? Is a 245 faster than a 235?
What's interesting to me is that the 215s vs 225s brought up in previous posts have a 3lb difference and only a minor change in tread width. Is the carcass that much stiffer? Would stiffer side walls (higher tire load rating) decrease autoX run times? I have to order tires in a few days and am leaning towards 235 RS3s and I can't stop speculating! |

stiffer sidewalls are generally a better thing to have, mainly for transient response.
grip is nice but if the tire needs more time to change direction then you're at the track designer's mercy.

Most of the penalty for extra width has to be coming from being pinched, not the extra weight. And I would put exactly 0 faith in per size tire weights being accurate anyway.
Bottom line, to me, is that we're all still talking about them, so there is no clear cut tire and size. 10 years ago the answer (when I was in STX) was Azenis in whatever size fit. This is more fun.

It was the answer in Stock 2 years ago as well. "I want a real shot at the win." Okay then, put the widest hoosier on there that will fit. Not cheap, but it was simple. Now we've gone nuts trying to do both formal and armchair testing to see what size of what compounds work in what environments, tossed in with the variables (if you're doing mostly internet watch-and-wait) of whether or not the guy who loves a certain tire: a - is driving a similar car b - in a similar climate c - is consistently fast d - and actually knows what the heck they are talking about It'll be nicer, though, when the tire companies stop introducing 3+ new/updated tire models every season.

Any alignment tips for a simple (camber bolts, rs3 v2) c street car? Of course as much camber as I can get up front, but what should I be trying for with toe? The car is daily driven, but not on the RS3s and I'm not too concerned about wear.

I went with 0 toe up front and factory spec toe in the rear. Some toe out up front would be nice - you don't realize how lazy your car's turn in is until you try this, but that can make highway driving tricky. I've never felt a need to change rear toe.

My 1/32 toe out up front (each side) isn't TOO darty but you do notice it a little.

There's a post somewhere that shows leaving the tie rods alone and maxing out front camber with crash bolts adds something like 1/32" toe in (from a factory alignment), but I can't find it. I did just that and left haven't touched the toe yet. Probably will this spring.

Anyone else notice that Hankook is no longer offering contingency for Pro Solo or Solo national tours?
I just checked today on SCCA site and didn't see it. Not saying I was going to win an event, but it would've been nice to get something in the offchance that I did. |
