Where did you get the ticket

Guys.

You dream about this sort of avoidance in video games, never mind real effing life. I'm not exaggerating when I say that, if I had my GoPro hooked up like I usually do, the video would have millions of views on YouTube in a matter of days.

I frankly don't care that I didn't have a camera rolling, because my car is my life right now, and totaling a motorcycle was hard enough on me.

What I did was use about ~30% of my braking power, and the rest to swerve in the open HOV lane to my left. I missed the car in front by less than a foot, and I was following about 15 feet away before impact. It was such a hard hit that I felt it. Thankfully, an officer was in traffic with us, and was able to help the people almost instantly.

I was nervous enough that I was taking a girl out on Valentine's Day, I certainly didn't need this to make it worse.

I want to thank Toyota/Subaru for making such a responsive car to help me miss that. Not many other cars would have allowed me to get out of the way like I did.

I just hope I wasn't a blithering idiot on my date.

EDIT: Needless to say, I'm not heading out to the 88 tonight. I'm still shaking it off.
Your post is a little unclear since you said you felt the (??) impact, but say you avoided a collision.

So you did or did not get hit? Is the car okay?

100% okay, I've never seen an accident in person, and the sound waves certainly had more impact on me than I thought they would. The only thing I was worried about was the glass shatter, but nothing was wrong with my right side whatsoever. I missed it completely.

Lucky you.

I've had several close encounters recently where traffic slowed down and then suddenly came to an abrupt halt ON THE FREEWAY. So, from 65 to 45 in about 5 seconds to suddenly near 0 in less than 2 seconds afterwards.

I've done the "shoulder dive" when braking alone wasn't going to get me to stop in time.

Such slowdowns REALLY piss me off, as they're usually caused by some snowbird forcing entry onto the freeway when there's a sufficient gap and he or she is going about 15 below the posted limit when flow of traffic is going about 15 above the posted limit.

Rush hour traffic at least is consistent: either consistently parked or consistently slow, not "traffic is flowing nicely... OH SHIT STOP STOP STOP *BANG!!!!*" unless someone else was a bonehead (all too common and the reason I avoid the I10 like the plague from the hours of 8 AM to 7 PM on weekdays).

I've been absolutely paranoid about drivers behind me, too, since I was rear-ended thanks to backed up traffic a week into owning my BRZ.

Glad to hear you, your car, and your date are okay. At the very least this should be good points in her book in your favor for your driving skills and prudence.

Btw, lucky you for having a date for Valentines Day. My date yet again is Rosie Palm....

That's exactly what happened. Cruising fine, then STOPPED. Mind boggling for sure.

About four turns in. I was testing out the new to me shoes and got caught doing about fifty around a turn by a sheriff. He was pretty cool though.
