So you've owned 1 subaru, and based on that, they all make strange noises daily and the paint is shit?

The only issue here is a shady dealer pissing off a customer. Nobody would really complain if things got fixed in a reasonable manner like your experience with Acura.
That was exactly it! Back then, we didn't have forums. We were lucky if we got to meet another car owner at the gas station or the local street races to talk about the same issues. If there was a problem, there was nobody to bitch at so you just had to suck it up or fix it.

I like the FR-S and don't mind waiting for one. There are a lot of owners who are problem free but at the same time there are folks with the same issues. Scion not taking of their customers is another issue; no win situation. I've seen and drove one and my initial response was "damn this !@#$ paint sucks". I feel for the OP and enough small issues would put me over the edge too.

You mentioned you're a college student so I'm going to assume you're in a "college area" how nearby the college are these dealers? Is it possible to make plans to visit a dealer "away" from the college areas? I'm thinking the dealer/service probably has issues with local college kids who act snotty and whether you do or not, you're lumped in that category. Add in all of your mods, whether allowable or not (I see you have a unichip and tune) and they're probably more concerned to touch your car than they are actually unhelpful. The sign of mods can sometimes indicate to a service department that they should be interested in how the person drives the car since a person's driving style can ultimately effect the long-term viability of any car. I'm wondering if this is your first new car, people's perceptions tend to change, as if "new" is akin to "perfect." I remember falling into that trap with my first new car, irked at every little thing that didn't measure up.

Not that you should have to, but I would find a nice, mid-volume dealer, put on business appropriate attire, and give it another shot.

Because its not a Subaru. It's a toyobaru. Therefore you have your pre-conceived idea of what Subaru would bring to the table, Toyota guys have there's.

No WRX/STi but my brother had a new 01 2.5RS for 8yrs and I have a 06 LGT bought new and no issues with rattles or reliability

I guess my family have been lucky b/c the BRZ is the first car that I have problems with creaks/rattles and other minor issues. I guess this is what happens owning a 1st yr production car in an all new platform.

Nope. My family has owned 6 different naturally aspirated subarus though, and they all worked great for a long time.

My car doesn't have any of the issues except for the chirp in the fuel pump but that was replaced and have been chirp free since 2k miles. I guess I'm one of the lucky few lol

Only problem I have is intermittent crickets, the rear deck rattle (I fixed that), and the garbage thin paint. 16k miles on a 11/12 build date. I can live with all of this compared with how well the car drives/handles. Some people just set the bar too high for what the car really is.

OP, you either have a lemon or you're leaving things out that contribute to your car's troublesome woes.

Actually sounds like you're part of the vast majority.

If the car was as plagued with problems as it may seem when reading this forum it would have hit major media already, jalopnik would have had a story about failing axles and blown DI seals and the CEL cam position stuff. They had small bits here and there but for the most part this car is delivering in terms of reliability and such.

A lot of people keep saying that these issues are unacceptable for a Toyota. Apparently they have a short memory. Look back to the last sports and sporty cars that Toyota produced.

MR2 Spyder
Early model issues - pre cats located in manifold could fail resulting in clogged main cat and particles ingested back into engine causing cylinder scarring and increased oil consumption. Results = total engine failure. Oil consumption issues led to crank bearing failure. Results = total engine failure. Transmission synchro problems on some 5 speed manuals. Other minor rattles and annoyances.

Celica GT-S
Early model issues - Random misfire CEL. Remedy was TSB to replace ECU and injectors. Transmission issues with failed sychros. Issues with oil pumps exploding during high RPM usage (improper downshifting blamed). Results = total engine failure. Oil starvation problems during hard cornering resulting in crank bearing damage. Results = total engine failure. (Why would a sporty car with an engine that is easily susceptible to oil starvation damage not have any baffles at all in the oil pan?) Other minor issues and rattles.

In both cases, Toyota had to replace engines, short blocks and transmissions under warranty. Most of the issues were fixed in subsequent model years. Some were never fixed and were blamed on driver error or lack of maintenance.

There are other examples with Toyota sports cars like the snap oversteer issue in the first year models of the MKII MR2 that Toyota addressed with suspension geometry changes in later years. I could go on but if you look back you will find Toyota has not been without problems with any of their sports (or sporty) cars.

I love Toyota but they are not foolproof when they build anything other than a car that is going to be driven like a Camry. As has been said many times in this thread; early adopters have to expect problems. Even when you are buying a Toyota.

Actually all this reminds me of when the 2002 WRX arrived in the states.

Lots of paint complaints, people dumping the clutch and grenading transmissions, noise and rattle complaints, and burning up the stock brakes.

A lot of this comes from expectations and a new owner base that aren't usual scion/subaru buyers.

10 years down the road people will want these cars just like they still want first model year WRX's despite all the problems.

I plan on keeping my BRZ 10+ years (or possibly forever) and fixing every problem that comes up myself with elegant and simple solutions.

Everybody is b!tching about the paint like it is specific to this car.

Newsflash: Most new car paint is garbage thin these days!

Our current Lexus RX350 (6 months old) has garbage thin paint that chips easily, our 2008 Lincoln MKX had garbage paint, our 2004 Acura TL had garbage paint.

I dont remember the last time I had a vechicle with great paint on it.

Reality is if you dont take care of your paint and keep the finish clean and protected its GOING TO F_CK UP. Stuff hitting your car at highway speeds IS GOING TO CHIP THE PAINT.
