Most definitely. Although, I already figured that most head units (even the 1000$+ kenwoods and pioneers) cost very little to make. We (consumers) don't set the market price... manufacturers do, unfortunately. And if anyone is actually successful in obtaining a wholesale priced unit, let me know. I would love to replace the CarPC I have with something a bit more user friendly. If it's cheaper, all the better.

I understand that's a base Ca-Fi unit without the Ca-Fi software. The screenshots show different software than what I have on mine.

The good news is, if we can get my unit rooted, we may be able to bring Torque and other goodies to more units!
I guess you're right. I tend to get a bit carried away when I see a bunch of different HUs and their best features. I start looking for one with ALL of these best features. But that's just not going to happen.

I want to buy it just to try it out at least so we have some comparison, but probably won't be able to until next pay check. (15th) =(

I'd love to collaborate a comparison if you grab one!

So far it looks good to me. I was at my local car audio shop the other day and was looking at the double din units from kenwood and alpine. The cheapest one they had on display was $999, and topping out at $1300 i believe. Each and every one of them felt clunky and slow in some respect. If i'm spending a grand on something, i want it to be more polished then those were. Obviously my expectations are lower if the HU was in the $5-600 range.

I've read all 10 pages of posts so far, even the rather unhelpful but partly amusing flame war, and have a few questions.

-Is there any way you can show us a picture of the connections on the back?
-Is the unit capable of displaying a rear view camera when shifted into reverse(or at all)?
-What video file types are supported? I'm kind of a media whore and have just about everything, .avi, .mkv, .mp4 ect.(i'm assuming HD video would be pushing things a bit)
-There was mention in a previous post about possibly needing an amp, was that part of the battle or is that something that needs to be addressed?
-How does the sound quality compare to the OEM HU?

I really don't care about it being "only" 2.2/2.3 as long as it runs NAV/video/music/BT calling/camera, i'll be happy.

-i don't have this particular unit in the car anymore. I'm running the ca-fi 621000 right now. I can grab pictures of that if you want.
-Yes. It has a rear camera input as well as various other inputs and outputs for both video and sound.
-Ummmm, I'm not sure. On the Adayo, probably whatever stock Froyo supports. You could always load an app that has more compatibility. I played 720p MP4's without issue.
-CarPC's need an amp. These units do not. They have an internal 45wx4 amp if you wanted to output directly to speakers.
-My stock BRZ unit had very low volume (Even turned up). So I'm going to say this is better. Quality wise, I didn't analyze the stock unit enough to pick up how it handles different frequencies. Also I replaced the speakers at the time of the head unit so it would be an unfair comparison.

Hope this helps!

A pic of the back of the other one would be great as that is the one I'm leaning towards now that I read the comparison. 720p is good enough for me, I've only got a few files in 1080i.

My FRS should be in my hands in December so I've got some time to decide. I haven't played around much with google maps, but I do like it and I'd probably use that as the nav. Does anybody know the details about loading maps before hand and how long they stay on the device?

I'm pretty much sold on it already, I just like to double check.

I'll grab some pics later tonight after work.

The Google maps stay on for 60 or 90 days I believe before being flushed. I'm actually going to load Sygic and NavFree tonight as well and see which one I like better. Both are offline navigation apps. The Sygic one is 30$ and the Navfree is ... free.

Hi, I've read some of this thread. I am intersted in the android unit, the operating system version doesn't matter.

Which one is compatible with my bluetooth OBD, so that Torque can use the OBD?

Many thanks

--------oops, I found the appropriate thread

Which company has done the engineering for this car?

Sorry for so many questions but I haven't seen this kind of joint development of a sports car since Mitsubishi and Chrysler joined to form DSM and produce the Eclipse / Talon, so it's kinda fascinating to me.
I have tried a few and like Navigon.

It won't be ordering it for at least another 3 weeks. And even then, I'll have to check my funds. =\

But if I do get it, I'll let you know. We can do a comparison.

NIm curious if you have any comments on the usability of the unit. I.e is the sound actually good, radio reception, weird lockups, errors, weird ui issues or anything?

Thanks for the great writeups and info.. Fyi found this deck on ebay with a coupon for 600

I just ordered the Ca-Fi "copy" on eBay for 400 bux. I'm gonna see if it has a capacitive touch screen and the ability to run Torque.

The sound is damn good, but I also have a really nice component and amp setup, so that might be the contributing factor. I never tested the new head units with the stock speakers.

Radio reception is good. One thing to note, which might take some people by surprise, is the Ca-Fi unit will lower the volume when lots of static occurs. It immediately raises it when you get a quality signal. Also, it will play the FM radio 2 seconds after turning on...while Android is booting.

Let us know how you make out!

I emailed the guy with the cafi looking unit and he said it was resistive... For a head unit I'm not sure if I care too much.

Any thoughts on running Torque on the Adayo? I know it would probably need to use the Bluetooth interface right?

Thx

Actually the bluetooth portion of the adayo is locked only to using it for the phone/music. Same on the Ca-Fi.

The way that Ca-Fi gets around it is with a modified version of Torque that uses a USB adapter (normal versions can't use USB on Android versions under 4). If I manage to root the head unit, I can extract the APK for use with other head units. It works VERY well on the Ca-Fi.

I might just bite the bullet and grab one of the cheaper ca-fi imitations just as a test bed. Apparently the hardware (minus the touchscreen) is the same. I wish I knew more about electronics engineering, I'd try to fab up one of those dual core ICS android "sticks" inside the head unit.

Any chance you'd be willing to make a copy of the GPS SD card that comes with the Adayo for me?
