What's the advantage with running 16"? Looks very similar in size to 225/45/17 except for more sidewall. Trying to learn, thanks! How many unicorns were killed to make your wheels😜?

I'm sure the 12lbs are a big part of it, but I remember him telling me something about the 16s being way wider?

If you notice from the video, it was a very, very tight and lower speed course for a national event and I think that may have helped him too. Either way, he was flying and would have likely won if it were slightly drier in the afternoon. I think our speeds dropped below 30 at least three times and possibly even below 20-25 in the really tight corners... I'd even say 16s were beneficial on that course.

My highlight was the karting. I had the fastest time in 2/3 kart races I did, so that's what I'm hanging onto for that event.

Ah, because of the taller therefore more flexible sidewall you can cram a 'wider' tire onto a 16" wheel and it will be happier, but looking at RE71R's and BFGRS right now it looks like that isn't a huge advantage other than a 225/50/16 RE71R is supposedly in it's sweet spot on a 7" wheel while the 225/45/17 is a bit pinched.

Maybe a 235 or 245-16 would go all in on that concept and prove useful.

I ran the event(I was almost last&#128556, I was just curious as to his thinking on the advantage of the 16's. Thanks.

The 16 inch tires are .4 of an inch wider than the 225/45/17. I'm not sure how people haven't realized this yet....they are also ever so slightly shorter, so the while the gearing did help, it was negligible. I'm surprised I was able to raw time CS who ran in our same heat....very odd. The 16 inch tires are also cheaper than the 17 inch tires, although finding suitable lightweight wheels is more difficult.

I should also mention I ran all 4 tires at 24.5 PSI for Saturday after wet runs...my tires are fairly new, and they worked very well in the wet.

Greetings people of DS. It looks like I'll be picking up a 2014 FRS for DS later this week. I have a line on some shocks and a FSB, but I'm looking for some DS legal cheap wheels (in black). Anyone have any recommendations. Also, where can I buy the crash bolts?

I'm thinking these with a 3mm spacer...

Also, the car I'm buying does not have a rear spoiler. Is there any rear spoiler that is legal to be added?

Thanks.

Motegi Traklites have a good reputation (I kinda want a set, wish they had a 7.5" that fit), you don't need a spacer (which would put you further away from OE, which might be your goal to widen the track width), rulebook section 13.4.A allows you plus or minus 7mm from stock offset which is 48.

Lots of places sell the crash bolts, google for the part number then google the part number, buy from the cheapest that won't take too long, or walk down to the dealership and order from them if they're close.

idk about the spoiler

Agreed I don't need the spacer, but since I can go down to +41, the spacer will legally widen the footprint for those wheels to +42

That part number for the crash bolt says it's a lower strut bolt and it has no cam to it. Is that right?

That is correct.

Yes. My 2013 came with a rear spoiler and I have documentation showing it is a Post Production Option (i.e. port-install, same as the infamous TRD suspension). It was a line item option so you don't have to worry about option package conversion.

Max, I'm shocked your doing this. After finally building an STX car I never want to touch a Street class car again!

Thanks Manfred. Now, I think I know the answer to this, but I presume that just adding the TRD spoiler would be illegal. The only spoiler I could add would be the stock one?

As for running DS, well I did it in a WRX and that thing was like wrestling a gorilla around the course. Surely a twin will be more fun? I'm not sure which is faster though - course dependent I'm sure.

The nice thing about a FRS or BRZ is that you can always build it into a STX car as funds allow. Funds don't allow that for now, but there is at least a path.

My main objective is a car that is competitive. We all know Scroggs is blindingly fast, but I do think the courses this year on the West Coast have really favored his car from a gearing perspective. I could be horribly wrong though, but that's ok as he's a good friend and I enjoy racing against him.

Correct - TRD spoiler was a dealer option.

Yes, the twin will definitely be more fun than a WRX. Don't get me wrong, I had fun with my car in CS, I just never want to go back.

Good luck this season! Hope to see you in STX soon!
