Damnit. The rear struts. I put the springs upside down. (The tightly coiled part on the bottom). Totally missed that part. Anyone know for it's ok to leave as is?

more about those damn clips

Thanks for the DIY, it helped when I replaced front suspension yesterday. The two clips for the speed sensor were a pain so I took some pictures trying to provide more details.
The top clip has 4 hooks (one of each side) and all 4 need to be pushed in while you pull the clip out using your fifth hand The picture shows the top and bottom hooks with green arrows and one of the side hooks (the other is on the invisible side) with a blue arrow. The side hooks (blue) may be a bit ahead of the top and down hooks (green) so you may try to squeeze the side hooks first, pull the clip enough so that you get past the side hooks and then squeeze the top and down hooks and finally pull the clip all the way out. I don't remember how I did it exactly, I just remember cursing.
I replaced the whole struts so I needed the clip out. But if you just replace the springs you may (and you should 'cos it's muuuch easier) leave the clip in the strut and just remove the wire from the clip. To do this, slide the screwdriver between the two tabs (marked with red and yellow dots in the picture) and push the red tab to the left. It will move easily and pop out so you can remove the wire with the rubber bushing out of the clip.
For the bottom clip it's easier, it just has 2 tabs on top and bottom (green arrows)

"Sorry for the old post revival guys, but I just wanted to inform anyone attempting this DIY that the tab (for rear shock) faces the rear...not the front of the car. I've double checked this on another stock 86 just to be sure.

You can easily check this prior to removing your rear shocks by looking closely through the hole where you'd insert the socket to remove top nut.

So which one is correct? I've removed my rear struts have been swapped out 3 times and no longer have a stock point of reference nor recall if I stayed consistent with the orientation every time.

I'm guessing this the tab sticking up toward the top back right of the picture is what we're all referring to:

Installed some trd coils today.

Everything went smoothly accept the rear bumpstops confused me, When sliding it on, and i installed as per directions. Small hole up. It slid quite easily over the collar on the shock rod. And just is sitting on the bottom of shock rod ontop of the strut cylinder. The fronts were snug on collar but could still be pushed down past collar quite easily. I tried to bring the bumpstop up over the collar. Tried to wedge it up with a flathead. I couldnt get it back up over the collar. On either shocks (yes happend on both:/) Ended up installing them with bumpstops on bottom of shock rod. As it started raining and im working outside , in a sketchy neighborhood with vehicle on jackstands.

Now i figured if the strut were to essentially bottom out, Or come close. The bumpstop will go back up into collar.

Right or wrong? Please and thanks

I should add the instructions state, "Install the new TRD bumper onto rear shock shaft" ..doesnt say snug to collar.

Anybody know if i should take them out again and really try to snug the bumpstops around collar. Lube it up. Haha

Huge thanks for this DIY thread!

I just installed my STI springs. I feel so damn good about it too haha

I was going to have a shop do it, but once I got the price quote...I told myself no way...I'm going to do this!

Feel so accomplished....guys, you can do it too! Save your money and just get another set of helping hands

Sorry to revive this post too, but I'd like to know the rationale for this tabs position and if it matters? I tried to look around but I couldnt find an answer.

As far as I can tell the part is symmetrical and the tab is irrelevant to owners.

Things like that may be used for manufacturing purposes like locating the rubber during assembly as it's pressed into the metal part. I'm sure there's a 'correct' way to put it in, but I don't think it matters, I long forgot as I've taken mine apart and put it back together dozens of times.

According to this, the OEM put red markings on front and rear strut tops for reference to orient them toward the front of the vehicle.
