I engine brake, in everything, cars, bikes, hell, even trucks, which are engine braking trying to slow down 50 tons.
Rev match, I rev match everything the same, in saying that, I have always been pretty bad at it, thank Jebus for ECUTEK and rev match. Wearing out engines and clutches, LOL, the crap people babble on about. Maybe they need to buy a Prius.

Gotta engine brake when needed, however it isn't really needed for everyday driving unless going down a long steep hill. I rarely engine brake and I'm at 80k with a decent bit of oem pad life left (car hasn't gone to auto X or track).
Engine braking is fun to do in every day driving though, so nothing wrong with that. I don't think you really cause any extra wear that would be measurable. With older cars that are more heavy with more shitty brakes you gotta engine brake and brake or else you just cook your brakes. This car is so light that you can use brakes a ton without any extra wear (not including autoX and track). My point is engine braking for the sake of conserving brakes is not really needed. Not engine braking for the sake of conserving clutch/engine wear is also not really needed. You engine brake when you go down a steep hill or you want to aid the brakes or just for the hell of it. Or you just use brakes because your lazy. Don't do it for the idea that your somehow conserving wear. (disclaimer: of course there are scenarios where you NEED to engine brake such as extended spirited driving that would cause the brakes to gain lots of heat. For daily driving engine braking is only for fun... most of the time) |

You should never be in neutral or clutched in while moving. If you rev match properly there is very little wear on the clutch as it’s all moving at the same speed when clamping. If you double clutch you can also eliminate the wear on the syncros. So the downshifts are essentially free. My car has 100k miles on the original, clutch master cylinder, clutch disk, pressure plate, flywheel, brake pads and rotors. In my 25 years of driving manuals I have never worn out a clutch. I have broken pressure plates from too many flat shifts and hard launch’s but never actually worn one out. I do typically rip through pads because I tropically run perf pads and despite what you think, I use the brakes, engine and gears all at the same time while stopping if needed. Besides all that downshifting just adds to the fun regardless of whether it’s 100% necessary. You seem like a good candidate for an auto. |

true story, i was once riding with my parents, and they ended up pacing next to a guy in a brand new corvette. country roads with a few stop lights and 55mph limit, every light, i watched as the entire car lurched as he went from 7th to 1st, one gear at a time.

Lol yeah yeah I can't drive because I actually know what gear I need to be in when I exit the turn, right. A dump truck will kill me if I am not ready I gear... I should drive a Prius because I don't drive aggressively enough since I use brakes instead of the engine. I am a liar because I said brake pads were $20 instead of $40. Keep on with the fallacies... Dando might be right though, maybe I am just lazy and maybe the wear is mostly negligible but it still seems silly to me keep downshifting your car when you could just press the brake and get the same effect. There are times when it make sense but most of the time the regular old brakes are just fine if you know what the next gear you will need to be in is in advance. And at the end of the day if I am going to choose between wearing on pads or my clutch/engine/transmission... brake pads all day long. Even if it means I shouldn't have a manual because I don't drive it like AutoX day everyday...

Engine braking literally has nothing to do with downshifting. Engine braking by definition is anytime you lift off the throttle and the ECU cuts all fuel and spark. It puts LESS wear on the engine than idling. If you want to argue about wear then leave engine braking out of it and stick purely to arguing that downshifts wear because that is technically correct although insignificant when done properly.
