Exactly. I just wish I had a choice; in CA you have to take it in. Mine is daily driven and tracked and thus far I have had zero problems/issues. At this point I think I’m going to go the route of being a registration scofflaw rather than rolling the dice with the recall.

What do they do if you don't take it in? I didn't read the letter that close and at this point have zero intention of taking it in.

Car ran fine before I took it in. They replaced the valve springs while I had my clutch replaced. Less than 500 miles later I was sitting on the side of the freeway with a bent rod. The paint on the new valve springs came off, clogged and choked my engine resulting in a bent rod.

Bad news: Recall broke my engine.
Good news: New short block thanks to Subaru and currently enjoying the 2019 Forester loaner while my car is in the shop.

They are lying to you about the failure, but you are getting it fixed no cost so

Results of the Valve Spring Recall Work

Yeah that is an interesting theory. I guess if all the paint (it isn’t just a mark but covers the entire top of the spring) from all 16 springs wound up in the pickup it wouldn’t be a good thing. Obviously paint chips will not bend a rod but oil starvation would spin a bearing but not sure a spun bearing would lead to a bent rod. Probably something lost in translation from the tech to the service manage and then to the customer.

The paint on the spring made the retainer sit crooked which blew out the locks, valve dropped and bent a rod. Wasn’t the techs fault. It was that darn paint.

Sounds like yours is one of the rare Subaru BRZ this has happened to . At least Subaru covered all the block and admitted to it . How is the forester ? My girl likes the sport model

As far as I can tell, you won’t be able to get it registered: https://techinfo.toyota.com/techInfo...p/j02tofaq.pdf
Can’t see any way around this... yet. I wonder if an out of state car coming into CA would need to show proof of recall work completed?

Thanks!

That sounds like a problem for 2021 me, looks like it doesn't prevent registration until the car goes in for smog which doesn't happen for 8 years after a new car gets purchased and I just paid my registration for 2019.

I believe there was a section in my letter indicating that you can have the repair performed by an independent mechanic and file for reimbursement (Q8 in the FAQ you linked) which should get the VIN on the list of vehicles that have been repaired.

My current thought is having The Racers Line do the work (I also need a throwout bearing replaced, the leaky timing chain cover resealed, and an overall engine health check), but I haven't called him up about it yet.

I'd rather pay out of pocket to have the engine built by someone I trust, I'd DIY but as I'm not ASE certified I have a hunch that'd be a big fat waste of time.

Why would you do that when you can have the recall work done, plus all that other stuff, for the cost of a TOB, down at your local Bay area Toyota dealership, by a highly trained, highly certified, highly experienced mechanic with a PhD in FA20 engineering and maintenance - ??
