Idle stop saves bugger all fuel, it is more of a gimmick than anything.
Fuel and emmisions are the elephant in the room that no one seems willing to see.

The 86 is never going to be a rocketship. It's a low priced sports car. Imo a little better drivability (more torque) will go a long way.

But how does it typically effect fuel economy on 1 vehicle? With the current trend in fuel usage targets is going to need more than what stop start gives, which, from my research on it, gives an average of 0.1l/100km gain in fuel economy.

There was an article I read somewhere about why some stop/ start systems suck. I recall it talking about how when the engine is designed with the feature, the engineers can turn off the engine so that the position of the crankshaft is at a certain point of rotation so that restarts are nearly seamless and with effectively zero NVH intrusion.
It is those engines that get the feature later that leads to "bucking" or they don't restart quickly. This is because they can't control the crankshaft positioning with enough precision. So sometimes it might work okay and other times it sucks. - I'm looking online and I can't find anything about the Ascent's FA24 having stop/start. I do believe the FB25 has it. If it is the FA24 in NA form, I would venture a guess that it would not include the feature. If it is the FB25, it probably would. The FB25 is also newer and designed for NA applications already. The Legacy is rated 27/35, and that is with AWD and a curb weight of 3,500 pounds in base form. While the FB25 would probably need a lot of tweaking, I imagine its overall emissions and fuel economy numbers would be impressive in the twins, at least with the 8A. The 6MT will probably still be rated 21/27 or whatever because of how the EPA tests cars. The 6A is currently 24/32; so I'm imagining that rising to 30/40 or somewhere around there. |

As long as you have the option to disable the Idle Stop (as on a BMW I've owned), it's a non-issue to me whether they add this or not. If you didn't have the option to disable it, that's another story.

The couple of cars I've driven (a Volvo and a Ford) with it require you to disable it each time you start the car, which isn't satisfactory to me. In the end though, it doesn't really bother me once I get used to it.

I don't get why people are so fussed over disabling Start-Stop. It only kills the engine when idling, when it's not necessary to have the car running and is smart enough in most cars to engage correctly or not stop at all, plus if you keep your foot on the clutch most won't even switch off. It's so non-intrusive that I'll happily take the minute fuel savings. It takes more effort to switch it off.
