I've seen over 40mpg in that, and I know its a decently fun car to drive. But I'd rather spend my money on a 200hp RWD coupe, because thats what I want.
I think the aim is a 30sh mpg sporty car, that would be something to write home about, though it'd be a rather boring letter :\

I don't see the civic si getting 40mpg, especially in town.

keep in mind, there is an ej204 with 190hp, which with DI they may be working on getting to be greener. if that's the case, then a big ol' :happy0180: for them

anyone know the mpg and emissions of this jdm spec ej20 engine?

Can't remember off the top of my head, but it should be significantly better for the FT-86 without much changes, because the FT-86 should be significantly lighter.

hoping it will have a really tall 6th gear for quiet highway cruising and so they can quote 30+ highway mpg. A match rev downshift to pass a car on the interstate if one of my favorite things.

Toyota need to raise FT-86's bonnet up. Moreover, I didn't expect to see the unique hood style and front fender vents because of the cost cutting. I used to think that we might see all those styling in the top trim model like Turbo or Limited or whatsoever. However, I think they should add those styling to base model if they increase the base price by 3K, but again, we don't have to believe in a rumor.

Add: I dun think Toyota planned to sell FT-86 for ONLY 20K. It's very cheap if you ask me.

In town, no no. But Highway?
Why not? We did a road trip in a 2008 Civic Si, 3 people, 3 bags of luggage. We drove 1257KM (781Mi) we averaged 6.1L/100km (38.56mpg) Just because you can make it go fast doesn't mean you should :P It took a long time, 12 and a half hours or so. but we did the speed limit the whole way.

I don't require 40mpg from a sports car, but 30 would be lovely. At this point though, I'll take what ever they can give us -- as long as they keep 200hp lol.

Personally i think the increase in age demographic is a good thing, i would love to see Toyota drop the boxer and go for a new 4age too.
Im 18 and i think what makes these cars cool is the age they are aimed at, the FT86 will be the coolest car to drive a few years after it comes out, simply because its a fast car that can drift and its aimed at older people.
Does anyone know what age demographic the AE86 was aimed at? I would be interested to make a comparison, possibly Toyota didn't even factor in age demographic back in 1982-1983.

I can't wait for the FT86!!!!!!

Well, let's look at the numbers. I would think it is reasonable to think that this vehicle's primary competition are the following in importance (all cars are base editions only - all prices Canadian rounded to nearest $100):

1- Hyundai Genesis Coupe ($24,500)
2- Mazda MX-5 ($29,000)
3- Mini Cooper ($23,000)
4- Honda Civic SI ($26,000)

Right now, biggest bang for buck is the Genesis Coupe - looking at what Toyota Canada has done with equivalent cars from Hyundai against the Yaris and Corolla, typically the pricing for these cars are anywhere from $1-4k more.

It would be a reasonable safe bet to assume the FT86 if released, would be perfect in the $26 to $27k range. This means if you fully load it, it would probably still be under the Genesis Coupe V6 but not by much. Perhaps a turbo'ed version of it would come out down the line to get to the 280hp range and be within reasonable striking distance pony wise but handle better?

Only time will tell. With each passing month for me though, the decision becomes: buy new car or buy a house. $15k downpayment is equivalent to a very nice kitchen and bathroom reno... or a house down payment topper.

Gah.

Remember the EJ series is a old design is now at 21 years old.
When the FT86 comes out it could have that new gen prototype engine that they where showing on the subaru site.
Also what one guy pointed out on the pic you see on the GT5 shot of the under bonnet showing the Red manifold that it looks very similar to top part of that prototype engine...

Mind you we wont know for sure untill they give us more info.

Prehaps Toyota cant show the new engine since Subaru hasnt released and shown a actual running example for 2011 or 2012 line up?

Prehaps they will have a eccomony mode so you can get good fuel eccomony and Sport mood where you get get more power etc and have more fun while driving.

Keep your foot out of it and you will not use as much gas. That simple. No need for a economy mode.

^ This.

Maybe Toyota won't reveal their engine because its so similar to the Subaru engine, and they want it to remain behind closed doors for now? How's that for speculation?

Subaru's version is expected to be revealed within 6months or more, so we may see some spied shots/videos of near production prototype(Toyota) months after that.

TOYOTA TO DO LIST:
1. lower power ratings
2. raise weight
3. lose ALL orignal interest
4. get non-enthuhsiast drivers into demographic
5. avoid return to creating competitive sports cars
6. make all members under age 50 in this forum cry to sleep every night.
