You know, I'm a huge toyota nut like most of you guys, but... I'm really unhappy with how hush hush they're making this all. I'm glad they're doing the work, but it almost makes me think they knew about it and it was a calculated risk or something. Idk. Just disappointed we don't have answers I guess... Might be removing my AP pulley JIC for a bit. On the bright side I have learned a lot about pulleys ahah. It's ironic too, since Toyota took all the warranty claims that the Subie motor is failing. They can't handle much bad rep. Even though everything else people have claimed is a complete scam... Hoping to work for Lexus here myself soon. Hope they'll let us know what went wrong. Heads is kinda odd.... broken timing chain or something? God knows. Broken cams is odd though... I haven't been around half as long as a lot of you guys, but I haven't seen that before... Seized a Miata block, (Last person to do an oil change improperly tightened drain, I had just bought it, music too loud, didn't hear it, looked down and was in the middle of bumf... so drove it as far as I could, and swapped it, it was at rebuild point soon anyhow.) Even that failure did almost NOTHING to the cams. Also had a 7M bottom end failure from intermix, and cams were OK. Definitely a manufacturing problem if it turns out it was cam related I'd say

Ok guys, so I don't know if this is the same issue, but I got a look at a car in my local dealers shop right now, lifter went through the valve cover, you can imagine the rest.... I have some pictures, aren't great, but I'll have to get them off my phone. Lucky for me I have a windows phone so no tapatalk. I miss android.... sigh* Anyhow. Toyota is keeping this really quiet, seems odd that some of these engine survive hundreds of hours boosted and tracked but then the OP is cruising, and the guy at this dealer said he mis shifted going UP from 2-3, and just hit the limiter in neutral? So sound like a man. defect to me... any updates OP?

Interesting, my issue sounds related as well, but I didnt have anything fly through my valve covers (that I know of of course). Only difference is my dealer is trying to blame for over revving the car - which never happened with me behind the wheel, and the only other people to drive my car are the dealer techs. My car had 27,031 miles on it when I dropped it off at the dealer.

Ah. Thanks. As promised.

Lifter is sheared and damaged after going through valve cover. This would explain leaking oil, without holes in the block, as well as support some other cam issues they've had. Really sucks for Toyota that they took all the warranty claims, but I'd rather deal with them than Subie honestly when it comes to warranty bits. How's the progress on the new motor? Or is it in and I missed it... I feel like it should be our right to know what broke on the engine regardless of if we paid for the motor or not...

Uh oh....

So my FR-S decided to go stupid about 30 minutes ago. Sounds exactly like lifter noise, almost deep enough to be bottom end? Was just cruising around, spirited driving, car wouldn't pull for some reason out of second, then I lifted, and it sound like garbage. No CEL or any other indication, just lots of clacking noises. No smoke, oil, or smells. Babied it back home and called roadside assistance, they're gonna pick it up and take it to the dealer in the morning. I have a catback, ghetto intake, (just PVC and a coupler replacing the mess and noise inducer etc, and lightweight pulley.) Really surprised by the no CEL... Seems to run O.K. Was under 2k rpm for about 8 miles or so driving home and it was quieted a lot. But like bottom end issues, now that it's sitting, feathering the throttle results in awful noises... Did they give you any issues at all for the intake and pulley? also, my car is super dirty... found some dirt roads back home and was having fun, but then drove it about 4-5 hours worth after that, car seems fine, so doubt that could be any issue... I'll hose it off tonight just to eliminate any dealer whining and pray for a good service rep....

Nope. Not shitting you. Well, actually, I am shitting you. It's ABS. So much harder, looks better. Just a pipe. MAF is where it was, replaced only the section to the TB, and the stupid noise inducer crap. No issues, no CEL with over 8k miles on it, been to a dealer like that already, no problems, and I even stated something didn't feel right. (ECU was still adjusting to 7,000ft altitude. SLOW AS HELL up there.) So put back on the stock intake, and a month later, put the ABS back in and throttle response was a bit better, only real difference was the ABS seems to stay colder, and annoying noise is gone from my right ear. More of an experiment really. Been meaning to put the stock one back on with the grimspeed plug, just haven't gotten to it, and then I had work pop up in Nashville, so here I be, with my stock intake back home in CO. Also, please, start another thread to bitch at my saving $200 for a piece of pipe, this is about my motor failing... Had the intake caused issues, a CEL would be well in order a while ago. Perhaps while climbing form 3,000 to 9,500? no? then probably not gonna happen anytime soon.
