I don't think it was engine braking because I could feel engine braking if I lifted off the throttle. When you shift down it gives you a rather nasty jolt, which I somehow doubt is engine braking. I guess it could possibly be very very bad driveline shock due to bad lockup clutch programming. Whatever it is, cars shouldn't jolt when you shift down, and it doesn't make sense to brake when you shift down for more power.

I would prefer a good manual transmission with close gear ratios and short, but a good automatic dual clutch, the difference

Still sounds like engine braking but with a really strict downshift programming with a locked torque converter.

ok, here goes.

I've driven all types of cars, from old minivans with crappy Slushboxes to hyped up street racers with Stage 3 Clutch setups. Personally, I always stick a 3 pedal configuration. I am a fan of simple mechanics, and nothing is simpler than that. When I say simple, I mean that mechanically. The only thing to go wrong in a manual box (besides driver error) is the clutch and flywheel, and those are relatively easy to change out. In auto boxes, any kind of problem and you're looking at a new tranny, which oftentimes means a new car.

I used to live right next to the city, and I can actually say that I prefer having a manual vehicle. This is because in an auto car, whenever you let go of the brake, the car automatically thinks you want to go forward. This is just not true, it just means I want to stop braking! if I am on flat pavement, I always go of my brakes so I can just chill in me car. Furthermore, shifting in traffic is not difficult at all. This is not stressful, and for me, it actually makes traffic more bearable, because I'm not bored out of my mind.

With that said, that's purely my opinion, and although Honda only offered the S2000 in Manual form, and only until recently, BMW has only offered manuals in their M5 cars, I can see a business case for the FT86 to offer a manual. I recently drove a G37S automated shifter, and came away very impressed. For those days where you just feel like not driving, you just sit back and get to your destination. I get that, I can understand that not everyone is an enthusiast 100% of the time like I am (I am currently sitting in my cubicle, waiting so I can get into my car and enjoy dodging old people down here in Florida). However, put it in manual mode, and shift using the paddles, man that thing is fun. I thought it was a double clutch setup for a moment actually, it was that good.

I am no longer that adamant about getting a 3 pedal car only. For the near future though, I am looking at getting an E39 M5, and either an S2000 or an FT86, depending on a few factors. I'll take all of them, in manual flavor please.

Wrong thread, this isn't the manual vs automatic discussion. This is about who is considering the automatic FR-S.

auto FRS sounds kinda dull, but those who need it "medically" I say why not. Plus rich daddy can buy his baby girl who doesn't know how to park a nice car!

Then more people will make videos of shitty women drivers on youtube (Which I find completely hilarious).

I just hope Toyota doesn't put in the cheap transmissions as they did in the 07 camry. It might save cost, but I don't want to replace it before 100k miles.

6 speed manual with 3 pedals.

The power output (low) of the car means that a dual clutch car won't really enjoy any real benefit. Slightly faster shifts, sure, but that helps a lot more when there's a turbo involved, since it keeps the boost all the way up. Additionally, a dual clutch transmission is about 100lbs heavier, so in a lower output non-turbo car, it may actually make it slower.

Also...having a manual transmissions greatly reduces the likelyhood of have somebody who can't drive worth a crap behind the wheel of my car.

A female LT that I work with recently was questioned as to why her car was so banged up (scrapes everywhere, dented in door, dented in rear, missing a side mirror) by our commander.

Her reply: Sir, I keep hitting inanimate objects.

Shit you not.

Sounds like the mountaineer my wife got from her mother. The body is a bit banged up and I had to scrub down the interior for fear of needing a hazmat suit to drive it for any realistic stretch of time.

[Edited to stay on topic] After 12 years of manual transmissions in my "fun" cars, I'm all for a quality paddle-shifting automatic transmission.

lol, I know what you mean but...

I disagree, most of the women in my family tend to drive manual transmissions, one of note being my mother. She is the most god awful driver that I have ever had the displeasure of riding with. I wouldn't let her drive my mountain bike, let alone automobile. How she's still around is beyond me.

Knowing how to operate a manual transmission != knowing how to drive like a non-idiot. Having two spare brain cells that know how to press a pedal in sync with moving a stick to and fro doesn't also mean they have driving skill. My 88 year old grandfather drives a manual and he can't even dodge a trash can. He is also the man who "taught" me how to drive a manual. When I was 12 he asked me what I would do if he had a heart attack and it was just he and I in the car. So he pulled over and told me to drive him home, giving me no instruction and just let me figure it out on my own. That poor Chrysler Horizon.

Also saying "No, you're not driving my car" works well too.
