I'm enjoying the door not slamming on me as I gather up my water bottle, running bag and other random stuff when getting to the office but it is strange not being able to close the door by simply looking at it. That was kind of a cool feature. hahaha |

I also installed the 2022 brz door checker since it was only $24 from Subaru and cheaper than the 2017+ version. Here’s the picture side by side. If I could go back I’d get just the 2017+ version. Reason being that it has a longer flat section and earlier in the travel which lets the door stay open at smaller angles (when someone parks really close to you) with the 2022 version the door only stay open in the deeper groove sections (but will definitely stay there) so the door has to open a lot before it can stay open. Not sure if this makes sense.
So it still comes right back at your shins if you just open the door just slightly. I can't believe I'm writing a review for door checkers |

Also why I felt remorse for not noticing it didn't do it with the new parts so I could pass it on two years ago.

Yeah I’ve noticed the same thing. It opens a little, a little more and then a lot. I’m in Florida so the first notch seems to hold just fine. I took some pictures of the door at the three stages. |

It's great that Toyobaru recognized the problem and solved it. And thirty three bucks is well worth it to fix the only real problem with 86 (besides the TOB of course).
But I think the improved part should be free. Even though I'm ordering mine today. The original fix on mine is less effective after 200,000 miles. |

Fact: according to the parts interchange catalog I looked at, the same door stay is used on the front door of ALL modern Subaru vehicles.
Assertion: Owning a Outback too (although a 2019 with the new door stay) I cannot imagine what it must have been like for the earlier Subarus with doors even heavier than the twins... This improvement was doubtless to address the problem on their mainstay vehicles, and was just an unexpected bonus for the twins.

I think the real issue is they took the check from a sedan and threw it on a coupe with significantly longer doors. Even if the BRZ door is lighter, the mechanical advantage will over work a check designed for a short door. The Twins are a mix of parts from Subaru and Toyota and the checks should have come from Toyota who have several coupes to pull from. |

Not the first time I have run into this issue with a coupe where they just tried to parts bin a door check. In this case it obviously didn't work well even on the sedans and SUVs so the issue would be magnified on the Twins.
