For me there's no added play. If you don't like it you can easily just put it back in.

hehe...put it back in lulz

On a serious note, I think the play is, uh, overplayed? I don't really notice the extra play. If its there, having better clutch feel is worth it.

Literally just did this on my lunch brake haha
Took about 5 minutes and the difference is definitely worth it!!!

As for the play? there's maybe a few mm of it. Nothing that bothers me.

Doesn't bother me. Better clutch feel outways the extra play at the top.

You could try swapping the stock clutch spring with the MTEC clutch spring. Supposed to be better feel than stock without the slop at the top. And in the middle of changing it, with the clutch spring out, drive around a bit and see if you like total spring removal before installing the MTEC one.

Have you adjust the clutch pedal height at all? It seems like those who have don't have as much play?

I haven't adjusted the clutch pedal height yet. It's one of the mods I'm debating. That and the mtec spring swap since sitting in traffic is more irritating after a good leg workout since I removed the spring. Haha

Just removed the spring in my FR-S last night. Holy Sh**! It's really not that stiff, but it feels so much better. The pedal feels like it sits a little lower but I can fix that tonight.

IT is so much better, i did mine last week. It feels like every other manual i have driven. It was my only complaint about the car!

This hit the nail on the head for me! I honestly had to get under there, with my hand on the pedal to really notice it. If people didn't complain about it, I doubt I would have ever noticed it. There is play, but there is no feedback/pressure for that first 1/4" or whatever it is.

I'm glad you guys are enjoying the DIY and the clutch spring removal, for the most part .

Eric

Today tried mtec spring install there. Failed. Had removed e-clip, pin was out .. but no matter what i tried, couldn't get stock spring and it's top mount off the pedal. With pressed pedal, depressed pedal .. tried to squeeze spring with pliers and press pedal :/. And yet it was 5min job for some .. HOW? :/

Took me less than 5 to remove the whole spring assembly. You may need to get a screwdriver in there to pry the spring out. The pin was the only thing holding it all together.

On second attempt succeeded. Without screwdriver, or pliers for that stage ..
1) pedal pressed in fully, for spring to be at longest state
2) i needed to push it with fingers in direction of wall, not to myself (probable reason, why i failed in first attempt). Slight wiggling and finally off.
Luckily e-clip was easy to get off/pin push out. Probably i bent clip in first attempt to ease that .

You guys should see how much effort we have to put in for RHD :P

I managed to remove the spring and reinstalled the spring holder in about an hour with lots of help from @Law's DIY.

First impression is how 'bouncy' the clutch feels now, the pedal return is really fast and smooth unlike stock. I don't believe I can feel the friction/bite point any clearer but since it's so linear, there's minimal stuttering and see-sawing when i shift.

It's definitely stiffer but the left leg will get used to it. I'll need to drive more before I can really tell the differences but I can wholeheartedly say that the spring's not going back anytime soon.

EDIT: Also since i reinstalled the spring holder, there's no play at all in the pedal. It's as solid as when the spring was there.

I just did this on my 2017 86 yesterday.. Has it been determined that there will be no ill-effects to the clutch itself? I see conflicting information, thanks.
