Why does a new scion TC have a 6-speed manual but the new corolla they're touting as a hot think only have a 4-speed?

All manuals are 6 speed.
Base L model only has 4 speed auto.
LE, S and That LE Eco has a CVT with 7 fake gears.

Toyota doesn't appear to have mated any of their smaller than 2.0L engines with any slushbox with more than 4 gears.
But they have paired them with CVT's....yet for some reason they still hang onto that old 4 speed relic.....

The engine lineup also doesn't make sense...whats the point having identical motors? Use the 1.8L valvematic motor across the whole lineup, everyone gets 140hp, and then they lose the 4 speed box. doesn't look as weak against the competition and they don't get flak for still keeping a 4 speed box around.

I could see a lot of similarities between the two. Nice to see the Corolla getting back to being a Corolla and not a cheap, boring eco car.

I would if Toyota brought back the real Twin Cam Corolla GTS. FR-S successor to the AE86!?!

I like it! Wouldn't buy one, not in the market for one, but pretty...dare I say interesting! ...for a Corolla.

I am not impressed. I think Hyundai makes a better compact. Also, I dislike how belt-lines keep getting higher and higher, it makes cars look bulky and is horrible for visibility. The styling is certainly modern but I think its disjointed and non-cohesive. I also think it will sell well, and will probably grow on me a lot.

Ah, they finally bring this to the US. You took long enough Toyota.

The deal is Valvematic adds valvetrain mass, so it's not suitable for high revs (yes you can rev it up but same reason why people don't try to rev pushrod motors very high). However, it complements turbos pretty well as you wouldn't need to use the blowoff valve as much and you wouldn't have much of a parasitic backpressure effect. I don't know how strong the ZR blocks are but eco-model LE Corolla motors could be pretty good candidates for boosting

The best feature is the 6 speed manual. This means they're finally dumping those dreadful 5 speeds which Hyundai dumped half a decade ago. Hopefully the Yaris follows suit shortly. Your turn Honda, ditch those 5 speeds already. This is 2013, not 1993.

I just fail to understand all the obsession with having no wheel gap. It's all good if you want to lower your car but sometimes you want a little play between the wheel, the fender and the potholes.

Just my personal preference I guess but I'd rather have a symmetrical wheel gap around the wheel than have a no gap at the top and three inches at the bottom of the fenders.

I don't care for the slammed look with the wheels touching the fenders that is so popular but you shouldn't be able to stick your whole hand vertically in between the tire and the fender either.

I've read somewhere that all models of the new Corolla will have LED headlights. Toyota...

but... LED headlights with drum rear brakes??? WTF???

Like others have said, it's an evolution of what the "current" Corolla's have been so I'm sure it'll sell well. With gas prices and our current economy who can say no to a rock solid reliable, gas efficient and cheap car that will get you laid in the back seat on Friday nights?

Agreed, that would be a bit extreme but I didn't see it that way on the Corolla photos (or the FRS for that matter). I figure they have to allow for different driving conditions and configurations including chains, etc. Remember that a lot of Corolla buyers, this is their only car.
