Any word yet on whether this will cause fitment issues with the AVO turbo kit?

Money in hand

I will try it next week (already have it sitting in the garage), so keep an eye for my review.

The EJ filter mounts on the bottom of the engine. this cooler would mount on the FA20's top without the need for a spacer.

Any thoughts?
Yeah, that's technically an oil HEATER. Gets it to temp faster.

You want to be using thermostatically controlled coolant coming FROM the radiator before going to the engine, which is how I thought the @robispec total cooling solution works. Note: his might not be thermostatically controlled, but that would be "best".

If you did that wont you be heating up your coolant before it goes into the motor? That would be good for the oil but bad for the coolant. I was under the impression you want to tap the water coming out of the engine. This works, I thought, because of the difference in optimum temperature between the two liquids. Coolant around 185F, oil around 220F.

The Impreza one does function as a heater mainly because I think the "cooler" itself isn't big enough to cool shit.

EDIT: Just thought about it. With a heat exchanger that cools using coolant, like the @robispec solution, doesn't the unit have its OWN coolant loop, separate from the engine coolant loop? That would solve the problem you brought up. Add thermostat to the loop and it's even better!

The heat exchanger is so small on the wrx unit that it won't effect the coolant temp too much. The cusco cooler is essentially the same thing. With a proper core I think you would have to place it on the hot side of the radiator to preserve coolant temps.

I think i'll just get a ram air hood and a regular air/oil cooler and mount it like a top mount IC :P

Both fluids cool the engine.
Most engine builders like to keep these temperatures as close together as possible And as cool as possible.
Reality is thermal limits generally run the water somewhere between hundred and 80 and 200 ° in a Race motor. And oil temperatures run just over 212 °
Water returning from most radiator system is over cooled.
You want the delta or the difference between any two fluids to be as high as possible in order to achieve the maximum thermal efficiency in transferring heat from one fluid to the other.
This is especially important when you're trying to transfer heat from a fluid that has a high thermal capacity like water or coolant or oil and fluid like air has a very low thermal capacity and must make up this lack by using tremendous CFM to keep up with the high thermal fluid capacity fluids.
So a typical delta for air to liquid would be over 100 Degrees.
When you have to like fluids of thermal capacity like oil and water the Delta can be significantly closer.
And most of these systems see about a 50 to 60 ° Delta.
That's why you want to you run the oil heat exchanger in the cold side tank because the water and except as much thermal energy from the oil as possible while not overheating the water because only so much can be shed before it's returned to the engine
