I just did this about an hour ago -- it's a cinch (I did this to install a new stalk for my fog lights)
Here are some pitfalls -- This is just a summary of what I read here and my experience - for pictures reference OP's pictures 1 - When you are attempting to take out the air bag, be extra careful not to snap anything (as far as plastics go). 2 - Forget the fuse, easier to disconnect the battery (the white fuse for the horn is the worse to take out and I gave up after screwing up my index finger (I don't have the tool to remove fuses). 2a. - If you are going to go with the route and remove the fuse, DON'T, it'll be a pain. Here are the fuses you need to take out INCLUDING the 3 with the horns) -- FUSE 47, and 35 (look it up on the owner's manual). SRS air bag system is 47 , SRS Air Bag system and Ignition is 35 -- Do not attempt to do this without removing those two at the very least (again, I'd just take the time to reprogram everything and just remove the Negative from the battery. 3 - There are only 3 holes near the steering wheel: Left, Right, Underneath. Before you begin poking the holes to release the air bag, I find it easier to lower the steering wheel all the way down and pull the wheel all the way out so you have room to look at the holes. When you begin, make sure that you press straight in, do not poke it like you're jamming something in hard, but moderate pressure is needed. Position of the screw driver should be horizontal (0 or 180 degrees; position: -- ). (The bottom hole, your screw driver should be at 90 degrees when pushing up; position | ) Also the pin underneath is easily pushed above the bracket. Make sure that you don't push too hard where the metal pin gets thrown out of it's place, difficult to get back in. 3a. - Do not pry the airbag open, each side when you push the pin, the airbag will pop out of place and not fall back in unless you push it -- Do not fret about it. It WILL not fall back in, unless you push against the airbag. The airbag will not fall off of the steering wheel either, so don't worry about that. 4 -Once the air bag is pulled out (slowly and carefully I might add), I suggest using a flat head screwdriver that is for precision devices, wrap it with some painters tape and try to wiggle it between the orange and yellow tab. Once the tabs are popped pull the connector straight up and out, do not bend the pins! 5 - On the airbag itself there's a blue wire with a spade. The spade has a notch on it, do not just pull it out, press on the notch to release the lock and then pull out -- you can risk ripping the wire apart since it's so flimsy 6 - once the airbag is detached you're good to go to do either the stalk install or whatever mod you need. If anyone is in the bay area that wants to get this done, Hit me up -- I'll help guide you through this. EASY PEASY! |

I got roughly 2 3/8 by 1 7/8 inch if I remember correctly. I'm going crazy looking for a emblem that fits the steering wheel right now.

The emblem is maybe a fraction of an inch bigger, but it's hard to tell. I trashed the stock emblem upon removal and threw it away, so couldn't compare.

That looks great! Killer job bud. Where'd you find the red laminated cardboard? Think we can get another shot of it dead on from the driver's seat?

Is there any way to have a adapter hub installed while retaining the original steering wheel and thus airbag, so the steering wheel can be pulled closer to the driver?

I want to see an Alcantara air bag cover stitched where it is on the 86 air bag in red stitching. I think it would look wonderful. Then obviously some sort of emblem in the center of that. Hmmm maybe I will have a project one day.

Giving me some trouble as well... before I get too frustrated I thought I would ask somebody who has done it. Ok...so I pushed in the side clips and released the airbag assembly from the top and sides...the bottom is difficult to dislodge. How hard did you pull to remove the airbag? Any tips or tricks on how to do this without breaking something? thanks in advance 2014 6-speed Monogram (37J) |
