I know it's a pretty accepted practice, but I still find it incredibly odd to give a complete stranger a thumbs up, whether they're driving the same (awesome) car you are or a true exotic. When was the last time anyone gave someone else, let alone a stranger, a thumbs up in any context?

If I run across any of you guys once I move back home to the NoVA area, I'll be sure to give a head nod. That being said, if I got a thumbs up first I'd probably wave or something.

You know. In certain cultures...for example, some Iranians find the motion of your thumb as you stroke it across your index finger from the fist position to the thumbs up very offensive.
Also, either Lebanese or Syrians, when passing the hookah pipe to the next person, if you point the pipe towards the person it is also considered offensive.

The Middle-east, offensive.

Dude, it's not odd unless you think a thumbs up is anything more than a gesture. It's just a convenient way of saying awesome without having to stick your head out of the window and yelling. Anywhere else but the road, yeah, a little creepy.

i agree usually i give a head nod or a small wave, also im sure this practice is different for people that grew up in different places or different car scenes. For example when i used to have a s2000 you'd be amazed how many other s2k owners would go out of there way to wave, thumbs up, have a conversation at a random stop light ect.
